Let's build a freakin FAQ!... Step 1...

Polaris, go for it man. If it turns out good then it would certainly be a nice addition...assuming you can host it somewhere?

Slackmaster 2000

Certainly. I can host it from my website, and you could then link to it from here.

How about, "What kind of mic should I get?, What program should I use for this or that?"

Maybe a link to the home-recording.com website that details alot of the basics. Was helpful for me.

We'll leave mic questions to the mic forum, but yeah, software information would definately be valuable.

"How does diaphragm size/polar pattern relate to mic applications? "

:D

how about definitions, what is a DAW, what is a Pre amp? I think a FAQ that has recommendations about gear is kinda mute though.

What gear do I need to start recording? and then give suggestions for entry level stuff.

david letterman style...

Top Ten Threads (in this forum or in general...ahh...excluding the Cave)

I liked hans' idea on sound samples. Maybe if not so much exact things to do but maybe things NOT to do.

For example, examples of such things as clipping, mics out of phase, scooped mids on guitars....hahahah jk on the last one there.

Good questions all! Keep em coming. I'll compile them all soon and see what we've got...

May be some repeats in here

-How should I mic my guitar amp? (some pictures or diagrams with breif descriptions of probable sound charactoristics)
-What is latency and what do I do about it, or should I care?
-Which motherboard should I buy? (Links to various sound card manufactorers recommended motherboard pages)
-My recordings sound like shit, what am I dong wrong? (direct to mp3 clinic :))
-This all costs a lot of money and I'm not sure how serious I am about it, is there any free/cheap software I can use to get started?

I don't know if your planning on digressing at all but
-I like my deathmetal pedal, what's all this buzz about tube amps?

This whole faq thingy is a great idea! I would like to contribute as much as I can I am really interested in one of the ideas already posted by cordura21...

this is not a faq, but it can be another idea. You can view all this from the "client" point of view, in the form of a decision path. Like: if you are recording just yourself, this gear. If you record more than 2 inputs, this. If you record acoustic instruments, that. If you want to use inter applications sound, etc...etc...etc...
Andrés

I think I wouldn't mind jumping in to help on a project like that. Let me know what you would like me to do...

And Slack if you need any other kind of help let me know...

Well, all the parts are here. So I will begin construction, and document it along the way, then upload the stuff to my website and forward the url to Slackmaster. It should be sweet. and by sweet I mean totally awesome.

The Gear Opinion Page (NOT HC)

I suggested this idea to Dragon probably about a year ago with no response. I wrote some pages that matched the theme here and everything, even hosted it and set it up using a MySQL database for testing. It worked, but I have since removed all that.

You can't use harmony-central because they don't rate all types of gear. They don't do mics, preamps, mixers, recorders...etc or at least not the last time I looked. They do guitars, amps and fx. (guitar fx usually). That stuff is great, but I can go to a shop and try out amps and they will sound the same at home. I can't go try out a preamp at a shop and see if it fits in the mix and if the headroom is big enough and all that at a store. what I can do is read about it from real users, not from a magazine wher EVERY review of EVERY peice of gear is great. (EQ, MIX, Recording, HomeRecording) . I hate that. Is everything great? Why do I dislike certain peices of gear?

Anyway, I want to second the gear repository idea. If someone needs to code it, I can code away.

a section on cables and conections would be a plus. Over the last couple years there have been hundreds of similar questions to:

Cheap vs expensive
Shielding
comercial vs home made
RCA, 1/4, TRS and adaptors

Perhaps even a "how to make cables" paragraph

Also, a huge repete inquiry here is "whats the best way to input my signal". Perhaps a blip on the pros and cons of DI, modlers, micing, pre-amps....

also... sound conditioning. Frequent issues of outboard vs/software pop up lots. What sound conditioning is better or worse if done pre or post recording (compression, EQ and the like). As well this may be suited as a clever pro/con commentary.

AUDIOPHILE 2496

Probably the most common question I see here is what is a cheap soundcard for under xxx$...and the nearly unilateral answer to that would be the 2496. Instead of a faq for this it should just be pasted at the top of every page. In huge letters.

Whats a Patchbay?
Whats a Midi Patchbay?
Do I need an External Mixer?
Is a software mixer better?
If I dont do Midi what kind of recording software should I buy?
If I dont do Software effects what recording software should I buy?
What books or Cds should I buy to learn?
Whats a Wave file?
Whats a Midi File?
Whats a Dither?
How do I get that Pro sound?
Why Is Mac better than PC? :D
Why is Intel Better than AMD?:D

Duck...
It should be a Computer Recording and Soundcards forum FAQ :D All your Q's above can be splited into MIDI forum FAQ and mixing / mastering forum FAQ... IMHO!

:D

Only think in terms of computer recording and soundcards
Yep your right James. I forgot about that part.:o
Is the" Computer recording and soundcards" FAQ the only one on the table for now?
While Im thinking about it! Not everyone has had a Computer. I just set up my best friends computer a month ago. Hes a Bass player in a band with another friend of mine who records but not on a computer.
My point is that there are problably guys who buy computers to record but have never been on the Net so they wouldnt even Know what a "FAQ" is. You might want the question "Whats a FAQ! or spell it out!

:D
