Let's build a freakin FAQ!... Step 1...

Yeah, it sounds like a really good idea to do kinda like a 'Choose your own adventure' thing with links you click on to narrow down your choices. I have a place that can host it, but I wouldn't know enough to do it myself.

...PC vs DAW.
...Hook two sound cards on one machine.
...How to build quite PC (noises & fan).

how about those ?

I think that links to hardware and software manufacturers would be a good thing as well...especially for those questions like "are there any soundcards with 1/4" inputs?" Heh.

Slackmaster 2000

Yeah, if there is a way to class soundcards by inputs and outputs, because what a user chooses for a soundcard depends largely on the system he or she has in place, or whether the person wants to use outboard equipment (mixers, fx, etc.) or whether all functions will be performed on the computer.

And the last time I researched software, I noticed similar characteristics: the best software depends on your current or potential recording situation. For example, I thought I remembered reading (after sifting through an ungodly amount of posts) that Samplitude is actually a better software for recording bands that don't rely on midi applications, whereas Cubase seems to shine in midi (if I am remembering correctly.. probably not ;) )

I think that the homerecording.com home page should be mentioned too, since that sorta serves as a FAQ.

1) do i need a mixer or a just soundcard is enough
2) OS
3) DAW vs Comps (PC vs Mac)
4) mics for vocal, acoustic guitar, drum set?

A list of best-bang-for-the-buck in all categories

I think a lot of questions could be saved if we had a system like Harmony Central or even added to thiers, by having gear lists and then you just go in there and put in your comments. So if you want to learn about what people think about thier VTB-1 you just go and click on the VTB-1 tab and boom there are 30 reviews of the VTB-1 all in one place by real users.

Or we could just use harmony central :)

Let's not get too wrapped up with the gear selection process...it will never be covered fully by any FAQ...there's just too much gear and too many opinions. The purpose here is to reduce the number of repetitive questions, and to get newbies up and running as fast as possible. Letting people know what gear is out there by simply linking to manufacturers, and then explaining how to use all the gear in a general sort of way will go a long ways in helping a newbie decide on a product.

Well, how about...
Q. What's wrong with Behringer.

====

But my first thought was a "bang for buck"-list on mic's. 'Cause that seems to be the overall most common question. But you're right Slack. Apart from your reasons there seems to be an inherent force in most homereccers to ask some types of questions. This being one of them. No matter how many times those questions get answered or in how many ways - they will still be asked when the person is on that step and the moon is in the proper phase...
We should stay clear from those questions simply because there's no point adding them to an faq. We only support an addictive behaviour.

But I do think we should add a list to some good general sites (maybe harmony central & studiocovers) and related faq's (maybe RAP and 4-track). This as an answer to the "general" question: "Where can I get info on..."

Good idea on the faq btw...

I would be willing to do a "How to build a computer" tutorial, and host it from my website. This would include pictures.

I am going to be building another computer next week, so let me know.

I have a digital Elph camera, and I am not afraid to use it!!

One that I didn't see...

How do I sink my computer to my multitrack...

Whoa...I probably wouldn't wanna sink it afterall would I....

- What is MIDI and how do I record it?
- How do I turn my MIDI tracks into audio (so I can use effects on it, burn it to CD, etc?)
- What are all these different plugin formats?
- How many tracks/plugins will I get from X computer with X software?

I tend to agree that giving "best for cheap" lists will make the FAQ outdated in no time flat. It would be better to link to resources that are updated by oher people.

Take care,
Chris

How about "How big a hole should I drill in my Soundblaster card to replace the 1/8" jack with a balanced 1/4" jack?" :D :D

Great Idea Slack but your still gonna have those that dont want to dig thru the piles of data to find their answers.

I know it's not about a faq...

But anyway. what about an sound example forum - did this, this way, with this equipment and so on. It should not be a forum for demiong music. More like a place in which you can find how that mic worked on for example a bassdrum with that setup.

It should preferably be short edits in high resolution mp3.

What about it?

Hans, interesting suggestion!

That's what the MP3 clinic is for though. People are usually more than happy to tell you what kind of gear they used.

The problem with having a list of gear and sound clips is that a sound is dependent on SO many things...the player, the instrument, the room, all the gear connected to the piece of gear in question, the engineer's skills, the quality of the mp3, and so on and so forth.

So it's kind of best just to listen to full on mixes and ask if you hear something you like. However, I've always wanted to build a database of professional records and the gear used to record them....the info is often hard to come by, really you have to read a lot of interviews and such. An interesting idea anyhow.

hey Slack, how about it? Do you want me to do a "How to build a computer" tutorial, and host it from my website?

I think it would help people that think buying a Dell or HP is the only route into digital recording.

Slackmaster2K

I thought it like "one level up" from the MP3 clinic. I mean to be able to have a closer look. It would be nice to listen to different mic setups on guitar for example.

I know the sound is depening on so many things. I don't think that's a problem, it's more like an oppurtunity to catch.

The discussion on "the way of doing that part" would be very interesting I think. I'd really love to see a discussion about my Astatic and SM57 compared micing a Marshall speaker at the same position.

Or why not a discussion about the sound of my Precision -75 through my Sansamp DI into my Digimax....24bit 44.1 khz, RME Hammerfall, Logic Audio.

Or a sound example of the Roland GP 100....and the settings.

There's not so much info you need actually to be able to get a clue about it.

Hans,

Polaris, go for it man. If it turns out good then it would certainly be a nice addition...assuming you can host it somewhere?

FAQ:

"Why do I hear my new recorded track on top of my original track?"

AKA " how can I listen to the tracks I've already recorded and record new ones, without recording the old tracks back into my computer?"

"I get little pops and clicks in my audio when I record, what should I do?"

"Why is there so much bass in the mixes I did on my little computer speakers?"

"Should I record my electric guitar out of the headphone jack on my Amp?"

"Why does James Argo spend so much time helping Newbies, does he have a Ghandi complex? Or would that be Light?"

"where can I get cigar's like Dachay's?"
