Hello! Having worked in music shops the past few years, I've come to realize that much of the time, there are instruments made by lesser-known smaller builders that have more to offer than big name brands both in terms of quality and value. Having just started recording, I'm only familiar with the best-known microphone manufacturers (Shure, Neumann, Audio Technica, Sennheiser, AKG, etc.) and was wondering if anyone could show me some cool smaller or lesser-known companies?

Thanks!
Preston

Microtech Gefell, Lawson, Brauner, Josephson, DPA, Royer. There's a gallery of badasses right there.

As a sleeper company for mics that exceed their price, look for Pearl mics. Not to be confused with Pearl/Milab, these mics were marketed by the Pearl Drum Company in the late 70's-early80's. They were actually made by Akai for PDC. I have one that is an obvious copy of a Shure SM54 and is a fine guitar cabinet mic. I paid $20 for it at a GC.

Thanks mate I'll keep my peepers peeled for those, I love new mic days.

Is this a question or statement or recommendation?
Many folks like the apex as a modding platform. Statement ;)

mod on mics spend $$$ you should buy the real thing... I got 3..775 2 where great one didn't cut it but for $60 why not...

In the pro audio world, I'd hardly call Royer lesser known. They're one of the biggest known brands.

To your average Joe home-wrecker who gets their shit from Guitar Center, maybe understandable, but that's more because Royers are way above their budget anyway, so there's no reason for them to know about them.
