I remember a long time ago in my RAP days reading about a set of CDs that you could buy to help you learn Freqs. In other works when you hear a certain Freq you know it's 200hz or whatever. There was also a website that had sinewaves that kinda served the same purpose. Anybody know what im talking about or a link to something similar?

time to step my ears up !!

Thanks

Malcolm

Ah...

That's about hearing intervals. Not frequencies. Completely different things. You'll never learn to hear when something is 200 Hz that way.

Not that you ever need to. :)

And I might add that the piano has lots of harmonics. Something you might want to try is generating a pure sine wave at different frequencies across the spectrum and then look at what you generated using a frequency analysis program. At least look at a sine wave first and then anything else with harmonics.

Steinbergs Wavelab has an excellent graphic analysis and it even can generate all kinds of waves.

I'm sure there are more scientific ways to describe it, but I tend to think of them as adjectives as follows:

60 Hz - Sub-bass harmonics
125 Hz - Thud
250 Hz - Boom, or mud/sludge (good or bad)
500 Hz - Honk
1 KHz - Whack, Thwack
2 Khz - Crack
4 Khz - Bite
6 Khz - Presence
8 Khz - Szzzibilance, ouch
18 Khz - Air

Hope this helps

Thanks alot guys, you all are making my favorites box just too crouded!:)

Thanks to all of you guys.

I just figured in my spare time when Im not tracking or mixing or whatever,, Ill just generate some sinewaves in wavelab with different freqs and learn them by ear. I could use the SA, but I want a audible interpertation instead of a visual one.

I need to learn from around 200 - 800 or so. the sub lows and upper hight freq I can pick up on fairly decent.

Thanks

Malcolm
