It's been a while since I've posted anything. I've been taking some time off writing and work's been super busy, having taken on a new job at work. But here's a new song I put together today. I had the lyrics lying around for a while but finally put down a melody. Basic live take. So....let me know what you think.....The lyrics are on the song page....

Excellent, high-energy song, Ido! Shades of Clampton from the 80s in the track.

Solid guitar work along with the rest of the music, plus very good vocals and lyrics. Great song all around.

Cheers,
Joseph

As Joseph says . . . classic rock borrowing heavily from the eighties. Vocally there is a Clapton touch, instrumentally it has that relentless push of ZZ Top.

The track has all the makings of a great pub rocker, energetic and exuberant.

This live take makes a great demo, and from here it can only get better.

Some suggestions:

1 I'm not sure whether there is a bass in here or not. If there is, it's too low. But I expect it is still to come. That will help push the thing along.

2 The drum track actually works for about 90% of the song, because that steady, unvarying rhythm helps the feeling of pushing relentlessness. However, some variations would be great to add variety and interest.

3. Similarly, there may be a part where you could pare things back and go with, say, just kit and vocals.

4. The vocals are fine, sung well, but a bit dull sounding. My ears were craving for an edge of crispness in there somewhere. Partly the dullness is accentuated by the reverb/delay effect. The effect itself is pretty good, but would really come to life with a more edgy vocal. The sound yo have there may be a result of the mike you are using.

5. Have you thought about doubling the vocal in the chorus, or even a harmony? (I'm interested in things that will create sonic movement throuhout the song).

Good stuff, and I look forward to revisions.

The makings of another classic Idotune.
The elements are there and I look forward to the multi track recording.
The guitar is pretty ferocious and I'm sure you'll arrange another part to give it some additional variety.
I look forward to Mike's bass part - lots of scope for him with this one.

Thanks for the listen and the comments guys.... This is just a live first draft and I will be multitracking the whole thing once I get the drums written - complete with rolls and crashes as mentioned. One of the challenges is to multitrack enough to give it some variety but just enough to allow it to be played live with a three piece band - actually very challenging.... Sometimes I forego that and just layer it all up :D and sometimes just a bit of midi keyboard backup suffices....

Anyway, thanks again....
:D:D:D:D

Hi,

Wow, that was great. I'm particularly jealous of the singing voice. I may try and steal it while you sleep.... ;)

Like GZ, by about half way through I did start notice the lack of variation though. By the end my attention was even beginning to wander a bit... :o However, it sounds like you're well aware of those issues, so the final result should be a good step up from this version.

I must admit to being very bad myself at being able to take the next step I'm not good at sticking with my own songs long enough to do decent arrangements, so I have lots of rough early versions that sounded OK at the time, but which get boring quickly when I listen again a month or two later.

Whoops...I'm digressing again. But that was a most enjoyable listen. Thanks.

Gerry - Don't I remember...

...you posting the lyrics to this on the forum a few months back? I love the straight ahead manner in which this song drives. I am ALWAYS envious of your guitar tone and some day mine may sound half as good. (I hope!) Are you going to work this one up as a full band tune? I would like to hear it with drums and one of your patented leads.

Guitar tone on this = 83 Kramer Pacer Imperial + mic'ed Marshall JCM900

I'm going to write the drum track first then multitrack a couple of guitars, bass, and new vocals. I'll probably keep it much the same as it is now but add a few leads and maybe harmonies to jazz it up.

Because of the staccato delivery of the 1st 3 lines of the Vs I love the melody on the final line – it is almost thrown away – but in a good way

I’m not sure that the shift to the Ch is as differentiated as it could be, but I am sure you will layer with the full recording.

I almost get a Deep Purple vibe from this – perhaps it is the guitar (with Dave on tone – maybe it is the latitude or longitude but my Marshal don’t sound like that in HK)

Your memory playing tricks on you IDO? :D

I liked it by the way. Especially the chorus.

Thanks Whatmysay, I love the tone of my Marshall with both my Kramer and my Fender. I've heard a lot of negative stuff about JCM900's (everyone likes JCM800's) but I don't agree.

Good points on the songwriting. They all ring true for me. I've added a lead to the intro/break/ending to jazz it up a bit. It still needs some tweaking which I hope to do this weekend. New mix is up - same link in original post.

Thanks Frankie - glad you liked it! My memory is good but it's short! :D
