Leading Me On - Mix #3

Damn I totally missed mix#2.

This sounds fuller, maybe too full. There seems to be a lot of low end resonance and a little mud in the lower frequencies. The bass playing is cool, but I'm getting the impression that there's a lot of fighting going on with the kick, bass, and low end of the guitars. Could be a reverb thing too. Everything sounds a little wet which could be taking away from some of the crispness that could be there. Vocals sound great and the level is just right. Solo is awesome too.

There are some boomy sounds in the low end that are distracting me, maybe something in the kick?

I think it is well tracked. The guitars could use some definition in my opinion. I think the vocals may need a little something, can't decide what.

Good work overall!

Thanks Greg and James - I'll have a look into the bass on the instruments and see if there's a build up there...

im liking it a lot man the vocals dont sound like them but they have almost a tragically hip vibe to them which is a good thing :) love it

The bass could use a tiny bit more vol for me (but then I'm a bassist).
Experiment use I hi pass filter on either bass or bass drum to Chop the bottom off & see how everything else sits -or run the bass & kick - see if there's a big overlap in the Freq analysis - but you know all that.
I love Mike's Rickie growl.
Excellent progress towards a finished G&M classic.

Hi ido1957,

I missed out on the earlier versions, but this is very cool.

I also would like to hear a bit more bass in the mix. The drums seems a bit low in the mix also. Rhythm section could be pushed harder, imho.

Guitar tones are great, and are nice and clear in the mix

Vocals are also very nice.

Last comment is that the song could use a bit more brightness in general. It does seem a bit muddled in the lows and mids.

Just a few thoughts. Hope they help.

Chris

Gerry, I think that the bass and the kick might be conflicting a bit, 'cos the kick has lots of boomy low end. That boom takes a lot of the definition away from the bass. What are you using for drums? Rest sounds good to me.

Leading Me On - Mix # 4

Okay here's some changes as requested....
- dropped the reverb mix level down from 6% to 5%.
- more bass definition for Ray (and other bass players :D)
- hi passed the guitars above around 85Hz
- rolled off the bass a bit on both the kick and the bass (40/85 Hz)

Let me know if anything needs further adjustment....

Appreciate all the feedback so far guys!

Shit yea man!!!

Sounds a millions times better already!

The thing that bugged me at first was that deep build up. Everything is sitting tight now.

I'd like to hear some harmonies with the vox!

Well done!

Good song, and sounds very professionally done. The vocals have a real kind of Steve Winwood sound which is good. I didn't hear the first three mixes, but i think the current mix is really good, but as I was listening I kept thinking "this song is begging for an interlude with a hot guitar solo". Then it came, and it was really good, i just thought it was an octave or so too low. Really well played, I just think with all the bass and hard driving electric guitar, it's begging for something to be played in the higher register, and the guitar solo could be just that place.

WOW!
That hit the sweet spot.
A terrific set of adjustments - the bass is ace.
Mike does what he does very well indeed!

Nice song, vocals remind me a little of Clapton. I'm new to recording, but the mix sounds good to me, you should be proud of this song. What did you use to record the guitars? I think they have a very good sound.

Thanks JD - I noticed the mix cleared up right away once I trimmed the bottom a bit.

Thanks GuitarZero - I see where you're coming from - solo in a higher register would probably work pretty good. I was trying to fill in with as much as I could in the lower range to accomodate a three piece (live) arrangment for later.

Guitars are
Rhythm = Kramer Pacer + GP8 + Marshall + SM57 -> computer
Lead = Eric Clapton Strat + GP8 + Marshall + SM57 -> computer

Thanks Ray - I followed your advice and it did the trick. This computer mixing has it's plus and minus factors....just need to work it out...:D

Nice! Sounds pretty good now, Gerry!
The boominess is gone now, I can hear everything. Bass has some timing issues here and there, but the sound is great! Rock on!

Joey :):):):)

Sweet bro. All good now. Love the guitar sound!

Nicely done.

Spoke to Mike and he might try another go at the bass line when he returns from his vacation in a couple weeks. Mike uses a nice EDIROL 101 but we've both found timing issues with monitoring (guitar and bass). Not sure if its the sound or latency or what but we never seemed to have that problem when recording to ADAT digital tape through a mixer. I laughed that in 5 years we'll be monitoring through telepathic means and we'll look back and laugh. You know, like the flying cars we have now.....lol :D

Thanks Chris - I'm pretty happy with the guitar rig I have. Now if I could just learn how to mix better.....

not only that....we'll be doing collabs with aliens from other planets!:D:D

I’m new to commenting on mixing so this is probably all about my taste or lack of it, rather than anything technical. Or it could just be my headphones?

I find that the rhythm guitars are panned too far apart leaving the centre of the field very open – exposing the bass, lead and vocal to exist in there own space. This maybe what you want? I know I tend to like big wall of sound arrangements.

I think that is part of the bass issues, without even a 'bleed' of guitar from left or right it seems separate from the other guitarists and I think that is why you feel they are out of beat; when I don't think they are.

The bass I would love to hear fatter you’ve got all those ‘high grit’ harmonics in the other guitars I’d love to hear some really deep stuff going on with the lower end – I think the tonality of your vocals would sit even better with that thickness behind them.

I find the guitars all very similar in tone, even the lead – what does it sound like in a mono mix? Can you distinguish all the elements?

Your vocals are so distinct (I have always enjoyed them when you’ve posted on song writing), and the band’s musicianship excellent. The song itself is engaging and has a great feel.

HTH
