Lead guitar help...

Ok, I am having general problems getting a pronounced lead guitar sound. I'm recording direct into my computer from a Carvin Quad-X preamp. I have a Boss dd-3 on the efx loop. This is my only means of recording as I dont have a cab or mic in my studio yet.

I'm using cubase as well.

The song is an Yngwie Malmsteen tune "Far Beyond the Sun." I used a backing track, quickly recorded the guitar in one take, so its very very very sloppy but it's my best "dialed in" sound. Please ignore the mistakes. Any tips on what to change to make it more impressive-sounding?

Maybe join up on Soundclick or MySpace or Nowhere Radio and upload an MP3 there for us to listen to....
 
I think the tone is very similar to what I remember hearing on his albums. The playing is damn good. You might try and bring it to the front a bit more. Drop the volume of the backing track, and then bring the nix as a whole up a bit. It gets lost some on the more dramatic rythum parts.
 
Finally - well worth the wait too. Excellent guitar soloing throughout on this. You've got some chops man. And the backups are equally impressive - driving the tune along as it should be. Nothing but good going on here....really enjoyed this one!
 
I hear what you mean,
The guitar sounds distant in the mix & dripping with verb or effect.
Harken unto the Dogman, bring the guitar up in the mix &/or drop the backing a tad.
From my ears I say dial in a little more guitar & a little less effect & she'll be Jake.
To me, not even in the shade of the shred shed's eves, this sound like the real thang.

i would bring the guitar up a bit in the mix (or backing track down). also i would dropped the delay down a bit, its just a bit too wet are it means during the really fast parts you lose a bit of definition. Perhaps you might want to track with no FX and add it in as an insert in cubase and perhaps automate the dry/wet mix so that during the faster bits its more dry and the slower bit where you really want to here it you can make it a bit wetter...

I'll record it again dry, but I've never used any cubase delay plugins. I hope I can figure it out.

One thing I noticed with Yngwie is that he does like his reverb, usually at the end of a phrase though. Did you try maybe a longer predelay on the reverb?

I haven't messed with it, really. I went direct from a preamp (with cabinent voicing) and a Boss dd-3 in the loop. The verb is on the preamp, so I used that. I'm going to re-record it dry as anything...no verb and no delay, and then try to add it after (something I've never done with guitar, only drums...but it's a different result that I desire). I'll do it in several takes and also punch record where it's sloppy..

The thing is, I'm pretty ignorant with delay features... With the pedal, I can just dial it in, but I don't know how to do it well with cubase plugins. Any tips?

I wish I had some tips. I normaly find a preset that I think I can work with and then make my adjustments from there, usually experimenting with the pre-delay features and distance effect. It's been a while since I've used the default reverbs with Cubase as I use the reverbs on my UAD card mostly now.

On a side note I find it very difficult to play a guitar solo dry with any sort of feeling (I guess you could call it). And I can totally relate on what your saying about dialing in on the pedal vs using a send effect on Cubase. I remember wondering "Since when is reverb/delay supposed to be so complicated!?" :D

Maybe someone else here can chime in with some suggestions.
 
Actually the mix is good. You just need to air it out a bit. To many low freq maybe eq the mix as a whole and bring up some highs. Thats what i heard anyways :)
