Hi There, Can any one tell me what would be the best way to record a lead guitar track over a pre-recorded backing track already recoded on a C.D?I have just purchased a computer with Windows XP and would probably use a miked amp set-up.Essentially what would be the cheapest way to do this and still get excellent quality? Thanks.:)

Excellent quality will be relative to what you consider excellent. You can get it recorded with low to mediocre quality by ripping the track to Audacity and recording the guitar amp with a USB mic. Better quality can be achieved by purchasing an interface and use a real (XLR) mic. Excellent in my opinion would take upwards of 10 grand of gear, not including the room and it's treatments, and an engineer with real experience using this stuff.

Thanks Jimmys69-What type of interface and mike would you reccommend?

Hello Sonnix-By best way I guess I mean in your experience using good quality, but not spending thousands of dollars on stuff I don't really need.I like quality but like simplicity as well. I'm just starting out and don't want to have to turn around and upgrade in 12 months time. The backing tracks I use are from Guitar Techniques magazines and I would like to have a reasonable amount of control over the mixdown process. Thanks.

On the cheap, you could get a Lexicon Alpha for $60. An SM57 for $100. The Alpha comes with Cubase LE5. That can theoretically get you very usable product. Prepare for the learning curve tho. :D
