Hi guys! Im looking for a LDC for around $1000. Basically I need it to record vocals, accoustic guitar, violins, piano, etc. I was wondering what you guys recomend. I was looking at the Neumann TLM-103,Mojave MA-200,Soundelux U195,and Rode K2. If you guys have any samples of the mics in action, or know where I can find them, that would be awesome

Add a Gefell to that list

Check out the Gefell M930, too.

That A-51tc looks sweet! Has anyone had expirience with these mics?

You can get a beyer M130 and M160 for that price. That combo is much more versatile than one LDC. those two are ribbons and sound really nice.

and yes, the Gefell m930 is amazing.

I own a pair.

My iniital reaction to seeing a $1000 condenser request is "hey, is everything else (including the room and the instruments) up to having that kind of microphone?" If the answer is no then spread around the budget.

If the answer is yes then I wold get the Neumann. If you are spending this much on a microphone you are developing a pro-level studio and other pros will expect a Neumann to be around.

I'd seriously take a look at a tube mic, Peluso 2247 (U47 style) or 2251 (Elux 251 style). They are just a tad more- $1250, but the warmth, forwardness and lushness will beat anything in the $1k price range.

I have and LOVE a Beyer m160. It is fabulous on ac gtr and violin, but I don't think you would get as good a vocal sound as one of the Peluso mics. I especially like double tracking with both mics for acoustic stuff.

A lot of tube mics are a one trick pony IME. Great on vocals and not much else. Ribbons however are fantastic on a variety of sources. Ribbons can work on voices(depending on the voice) and definitely work on instruments. Gotta look at versatility.

and to the guy that said people expect neumanns....thats not true at all.
most of my clients expect a good sounding product...and leave all the mic decisions up to me. Maybe it is different in the rock world, but here in classical world...people trust my judgment. It has also been my experience that the more talented the Classical musician, the dumber they are in regards to recording gear. :)

Hence why they ask for Neumann mics, the same as they'll ask if you're running pro-tools - cos they've heard that that's what the big boys use.

Not saying it's right, but that has been my experience at least, to the point where I picked up a Neumann just to say I have one. I won't bend as far as using protools though :)

I have a Rode K2 and am quite pleased with it. That Soundelux U195 I hear is quite flexible. Some nice mics out there in this range. Here's a small sample of the K2 -

Relatively inexpensive and pretty decent mics. Definately more bang than you would expect for the price.

Wow, that sounds really nice:) . Do you have recordings of the K2 on say an accoustic guitar? What kind of pre did you run it into, if I may ask.

Yeah, I own a pair of u87s, but I dont ever use them. Might get them modded, but dont like them as is.

I like AKG C414B-XLS. A wicked versatile workhorse.-Richie

I'll third the Peluso 2247 and throw the Peluso 22 251 in as well. Both mics are a few hundred over your budget but you won't regret coming up with the extra cash once you use either of the above mics IMHO. Good luck. :)

I'll look around for some acoustic guitar recordings, I might have some that I just don't want to post because they're so bad, I'll look though. The pre is nothing special - onboard preamps from a Yamaha 01V. That sample, I ran it through an Art Pro VLA before recording just touching some gain reduction - some reverb & mod delay - no eq'ing. I'd kinda like to hear some samples from some others too as one can never have too many mics!
