In the Lateralus CD by Tool (Danny Carey is the drummer):

What heads are used?

What mics are used?

What kind of tuning/muffling?

Any suggestions on mic placement?

Drum Tech called Jeff Okletree. HE is why his kit sounds so good. He built the drums that Danny uses also, made out of old paiste cymbals.

I have a DVD of techniques Jeff Okletree uses and it has a bit about Danny Carey, I'll watch it today and tell you what i find :D

That isn't the kick used on Lateralus.

Jeff Ochletree was also John Bonham's drum roadie.

uhhh, triggers?!

He said he doesn't trigger the drums live - he said he prefers to keep the two separate....i.e., He just triggers non-drumkit sounds from the pads.

He already has an electric kick. He has 7 drum pads... and one of them is an bass drum pad. Tim is right.

ur all wrong! i talked to jeff. Jeff IS NOT Danny's tech. On a clinic tour of Danny Carey, jeff tech-ed. In the studio, Danny used a 1989 Sonor Signature Bubinga kit.

hi guys... here's what you wanted to know

from dannycarey.org
Q: What kind of heads do you use on your drum kits and what pitches do you tune them to?

A: All of the heads I use are Evans. On the snare I use a power center head on top with a medium or thin snare head on the bottom. On the toms I use clear G2s on top and clear G1s on the bottom and on the Bass drums I have EQ 3 heads on the batter side and lately I have been using retro screens on the front.

In the studio I always try to tune the toms to the key of the song. Sometimes this doesn't work to well because all drums have a very limited range that they will resonate and project in, but usually I am able to get close to one of the notes in the dominate triad. Because 90% of Tools songs are in D, I always try to have them tuned to D, F, and A when playing live. When tuning a drum to a definite pitch, it is easiest to aim at a whole step below the desired note and then carefully bring it up to it. It also helps tremendously to stretch the head by occasionally pushing down on it firmly with your hand along the way.

it should be known that I absofreakinglutely LOVE the bass drum sound on lateralus. It's got to be the most unique sounding thing ever... I think it's most pronounced in the sound "Lateralus" for those of you who need a first time listen (plus there's a part that's just vox and drums and it's easy to hear what we're talking about).

here's something from the toolband website... it's a pic of the studio stuff... there's giant bags over the bass drums, but I bet that's just to prevent bleeding... but i wonder if it contributed to the sound

Danny Carey has 2 drum sets. The Paiste one that we all know about, and the Sonor Designer that Duotone is talking about. I'm not sure which one he uses for what though. Does anyone know?

he also talked about an 80's steel "Octoplus" drum set that he used for "the grudge" and others...
the grudge has some hands down excellent drum work... specifically the toms

god i can't wait for the next album
