Some folks say or most people say that Large Condenser mics are only for studio use.

But I tried using the Audio Technica 2020 in a small stage gig with a Phonic mixing desk and two large speakers. It was just a vocals and guitar gig, I found it worked amazingly well , it was quite a noisey venue with people chattering but I was suprised the mic did'nt pick up the crowd noise ( mind you I was singing quite close to the mic)

Did you think I got away with it because the AT 2020 is slightly smaller then your standered large condenser mics.

Is it common for singers use large condensers in a live setting?

Of course you have to turn the main fader right down to number 3 of the volume and the gain to number 6-7.

The 2020 doesn't have a large (1"+) diaphragm. It's a little over a half inch.

And no, it's not too common to use LD mics in live situations, although they do get used now and again for ensemble playing, especially with blue grass and "old time" music. Takes coordination by the talent to use them well in that situation however.

Being a bluegrasser myself, I see this a lot...however when I'm playing on stage I prefer individual mics... I'm seeing a lot of the AT4047 for bluegrass, on stage, lately...
