I have a new laptop(dell) with 512 of ram, and 3.1 ghz proc. That should be fast enough for mhy adobe, but when I play back, the cursur (little time line dealy) is falling behind the actual sound, it might catch up every now and then, but it's not in real time alot. I have nothing running in my tray, and everything is shut off beside adobe. Is there a setting I'm missing here?

p.s. I should add that the actual sound is not skipping or lagging

What version of windows are you running?

p.s. I should add that the actual sound is not skipping or lagging

Could be a display or video card problem. If it was a soundcard issue it would be skipping as well.

xp, it is the stock sound card, I intend to get another, but this is it for now

im having the exact same problem...my laptop is low on ram, but it was working fine...then suddenly this started...

im using a dell inspiron with m-audio omnistudio USB...like i said, i have recorded fine with this setup previously...

i just ordered a ram upgrade....but i want to know how to resolve this issue if the upgrade doesnt work.

actually my problem might be different...

if the instrumental is on track one...

i try to record on other tracks, and they are always way off on playback. Its as if the acapella is shifting tempo's

I upgraded to one gig memory and it does wonders.

Check your settings. I believe there is a box to check there if you want to monitor your mix in real time. While your there check your buffers. Raise them a bit over the recomended level (usually AA recomends 8, I do 10)

Also might want to check out the Echo Indigo Soundcard if your doing one track at a time. I got one for my laptop and was very happy. Still use it even though I have a firepod now (which gave me headaches all weekend, but I finally got it resolved)

Good Luck

i appreciate it, i will give your suggestions a try

with the indigo tho, my omnistudio already acts as an interface? will i need to use a non-usb preamp with that? i have an audiobuddy as well

the simplest solution may be the right one ...hopefully

Right click on the`little green bar on the bottom left in MultiTrack..

Its the mixing bar or sumtin...there should be a "mix priority" when you right click on it...it should be at normal...or maybe a step higher.

Hope this helps..

Hey Crispy - I've never noticed that one before - nice one!

Cool!

Sometimes when you can "tell" your computer is lagging, (like it skips, freezes for a second, basically chokes) you may notice that this "backround mixing" bar is a little depleted.

Many a 20+ multitrack session have had to repeatedly click "stop"..

and then press "F5" to Refresh the mixing bar. Its like a wake up call for your RAM ;)

someone on another board told me there is an option to "set drift" that corrects my problem. he is using the same setup as me, and had the same problem....havent tried it yet, but i will when i get time lol

Yeah, Crispy is correct. It's usually a memory problem with Adobe, not your PC. In large session files, Adobe's memory gets a bit fragmented, and needs to be refreshed. You can do so by saving your session so it wipes out the temp files, or by hitting F5.

F5

"Choosing Refresh Now instructs Cool Edit Pro to initiate the background mix from scratch. This will rebuild your session’s output."

So, what do you dump when you press F5? All the temp files?

As POETS said,

Saving the session will dump the temps...

F5 will just reorganize (defrag) all the .ses info, (envelopes, changed levels etc.)

if im not mistaken...
