Hi, i've just purchased M-Box 2 with pro tools le8 and wand to buy a new Lap top to run it on, can anyone give me some advice on which lap top and the
kind of spec it will need to do the job well, so far i've come across the
PCAudio Labs Rok Box mobile HD and the MUSICXPC-M4x (intel core duo 2.0ghz) i'm not to keen on 'Mac' can anybody advise, i've got around £1,000 to spend, Thanks!

if you go for a pc you've got more ability to expand it in the future and upgrade and so on.

Looking at some reviews it seems people are having issues getting pro tools to run properly on OS. There also seem to be issues to Vista. However, according to Microsoft's website Windows 7 will run all XP based programs with ease, with the exception of a few very complex business programs. I'm guessing if you use your PC to run a business you'd likely get 7 Professional, and MS offer a free download for 7 Pro to run it in XP mode. Since the laptop I just got has 7 Home I'm hoping Sonar aint considered business software... :)

I'm actually thinking of getting a Mac laptop (maybe the new 250GB SDD MacBook Air) and running my windows software under parallels.

Interestingly Sonar doesn't support their software on Macs running Windows. Why? There's an Apple store in the Gateway mall about 20 miles from me in Salt Lake City. I can have them install Windows for me and thus buy a Mac directly from Apple running windows. Even this would not be supported. I'm guessing it'd work perfectly. Sonar have told me they won't support my XP version on a Windows 7 computer, well I got one anyway since MS states on it's site that 7 will run XP programs with ease (their words).

I dont mean to bash on sonar but take away its plugins and its the poorest of the big daws imho...very crowded GUI, complicated automation...it will do you but the others are better

XP is going to start losing support soon, i think pro-tools is dropping support in 2012, im sure others will follow so consider that

but thats more than enough money to buy a great performing laptop....some considerations would be what are you going to record, lots of softsynths are going to eat up your cpu whereas storing lots of samples is going to eat up that hard disk, remember even some basic drum programs can take 20-40gb for their samples..how many usb ports, does it have firewire, are you going to run midi controllers off it

I have a macbook pro, a sony vaio, and a dell and they all run daws easily...but they all have different features

Complicated automation? I just mash the "write button" track whatever changes (volume, fade, mute, fx automation), mash the "read button" and listen to the results. Doesn't seem too terribly complimocated to me.

i meant for writing envelopes....

in most of the others you can just point to any part of the envelope and move the automation how you'd like..in sonar its either a drop down menu or use the write tool....time consuming or a drawn out process (pun intended)

maybe if you dont use much automation it wouldnt be a hassle, i use loads, it was a hassle

im not the only one that doesnt like it, have a scan at the cakewalk forum, i was a member there before i realised it wasnt going to be the daw id use and there were plenty of pleas for it to be updated

I just got an Acer Aspire notebook, upgrading the old job and getting new monitor was getting toward the price of the replacement. So it went that way.

Hi, my set up is dead basic, i'm recording acustic instruments like mandolin, banjo,
guitar, and Vocals, all through the same source, which is a quality condencer mic and pre-amp into an M-Box, i don't use any beats or samples just the instruments and voice,
is there a lap or desktop made especially for this sort of thing? i've been advised the following spec, Intel Core Duo 2 T7800 2.6GHz processors, 7200 RPM Internal hard drives, 4GB Ram DD2/3 667? Memory, Texas Instruments firewire (built in?) Chip Set
(Santa Rosa) plus the less noisey the better, thanks again!
