Must be my day for reviews, just did one over on microphones....anyway, don't want to sound like I'm raving about everything today, but I purchased a Kurzweil Rumour a few weeks ago, finally had time this week in the studio to give it a good run through....this thing is amazing! Makes me wonder what the big daddy "KSP8" would be like (sigh), although all reports say same sound, not nearly as tweakable...I can live with that, you could to (probably) once you hear the presets and see how easy it is to adjust the available parameters.
Previously, I've been using Lexicons (MPX1,MPX500,LXP15II,MPX100) as well as an Ensoniq DP2 and a Yamaha Rev500 to cover my reverb needs....should have bought Lex PCM's, but I have to say now I'm glad I didn't...don't get me wrong, I know what I'm comparing this to is not the be all, end all (by any means) in digital reverb, but I'm so convinced this is the best I can do (within my budget), I'm buying another Rumour(replacing the Lex100, Yamaha Rev500, and "maybe" the Ensoniq DP2...can't decide if I really want to let it go).

Anyway, don't want to get into all the "catch phrases"...nice tails, crisp, detailed...all of that, since sound is so subjective anyway, just let me say run, don't walk to the nearest place that has a demo unit and give it a listen...if you're used to "very" high end units you "may" not be overly impressed (wouldn't be surprised if you are however) but most everyone else should be...closer to Lexicon than TC variety (my preference anyway) so keep that in mind. This thing is the real deal in my mind, I couldn't be happier with this purchase, ranks up there with the RNC (wish it was that cheap though!)

TexRoadkill,

Not sure of the U.S. street price, Canadian price was $899.00 plus taxes....compared to my Lexicon MPX1 ($1200.00 Canadian) it's a no brainer, but I'll keep the Lex's anyway, still some useable stuff in there, more for effects than reverb though.

Hate to say it (in case the $ goes up) but this piece is worth more, or everything in the current $ ballpark is overpriced...come to think of it, what isn't?

Best of luck,

BW

I think US street price is between $500-600.

Howdy.
Are you saying that you like the selection of reverbs better than the MPX1?
I was thinking hard about an MPX1 for mainly reverb and other general effects and a Kurzweil Mangler for the way out stuff and to give myself a total of four channels.

You said you would probably sell the MPX100 and the Yamaha. Does that make the MPX1 still viable for you in spite of the Rumour?

Thanks

Fletchers' Mercenary ha it in stock for @$550.

Me want one!!!!

ditnoj,

Up until now, the MPX1 and MPX500 shared duties as my main reverbs...funny thing was, in most cases I preferred the MPX500.
Anyway, there is no question, the Kurzweil is way above this league, especially when it comes to reverbs....from my limited exposure to Lex PCM stuff, those would be a fairer comparison...my gut tells me the Kurzweil would be my pick here, but I'd have to do a side by side.
I'm keeping the MPX1 around anyway because I paid full pop for it and can't justify taking a hit when selling, it still has some very decent sounds (even some reverbs) and I always have a need for an extra box around when mix time comes.
Is it still viable....yes, but unfortuantely for Lexicon, there's another box around now (maybe more) that does a better job at below this price point as a main reverb for budget studios. I know this sounds like a lot from a unit at this price, but if you sprang for a KSP8 (which is the main reverb for many studios now) you reportedly would be very close to the stock reverbs with the Rumour, just not as tweakable....and let me also say, one of the real selling points for me adding a second one to the studio is I find it extremely easy to tweak...logical, straightforward, and easily accessable parameters to adjust, unlike some units where you are bogged down in menus to the point you sometimes "live" with the presets (to a degree, nobody really uses these untouched, do they?)
I know you didn't ask about effects, but they are very impressive as well.
Best of luck whatever you choose....I have gotten some very good results over the past few years using the MPX1, although admittedly I always longed for something "better", now I am fully convinced I have that....others may not feel the same, that's understandable...different strokes and all that!

Hope this helps,

BW
