Kurzweil Rumour, can the output volume knob 4 monitoring be improved?

I have the Rumour and the 002 and use the Rumours output volume for control room monitoring. I was wondering what everyones thoughts are on keeping the volume at unity gain and going into into a stepped attenuttor and if that would make much difference as far as imaging and monitoring quality.

Should I put my $$$ elsewhere?
