Korg x5- Digi002r- PTLE= I need a midi signal

Midi is new to me, been recording analog for a few years. So's I have this Korg x5, midi i/o to a Digidesign 002r, USB'd into my PC (HP Pavillion). I believe my internal settings are o.k., but have no way of getting a signal.
What am I missing? I have read every manual and followed every post that I can stomach- I've overlooked something. Do I need to run through software (Reason or something else) in order to generate a signal?
I am able to to get an analog signal into PT by plugging the Korg (analog output) into a Behringer V-amp hooked up to mic/ line 1. Do I need a virtual equivalent of the Behringer for midi capability? I want to enjoy all that midi has to offer, dammit. -and silence hunkered down for a spell

Ther is no audio signal present in a MIDI data stream. It's a communications protocol and contains messages telling compliant instruments to play notes, how long to hold them, how loud, etc.

I get it, but (if it helps I'll admit I'm a dumbass on the subject) I've worked with midi before, just never had to hook it up. My problem surrounds recognizing a midi device. I'm working with ProTools with a 002r. The manuals tells me I do not need any other midi intereface type thing, I believe I have the channels assigned correctly. From reading manuals I think I should have an Edit Midi Studio option under the Setup menu (PT6.0)... it's not there. How do I get PT to recognize this Korg as a midi device. If I have mixed up my vocabulary, sorry, but I am at least somewhat clear on the concept. I do appreciate patience, and have no where else to go right now. Secondly, does anybody have an opinion on schools for this kind of stuff (recording, midi, PT in particular)? I'm looking to learn a whole lot very quickly. -Gracias

Sorry, I have no experience with Pro Tools, but if there's a MIDI interface in the Digi 002, then there must be a way of accessing it through Pro Tools LE... surely there is documentation?

Here's what you do.
1. Hook up your midi out #1 on the 002r to the Korg input.
2. Hook up your midi out on the Korg to the midi input on the 002r (theres only one).
3. In the midi menu in ProTools, near the bottom, there will ne a place to setup the sync. When you get into that page, there will be 2 to 3 check boxes ( DIGI PORT 1, DIGI PORT 2, and whatever if any midi interfaces you would have hooked up.) Click DIGI port 1 and 2. This way the midi control message will be sent to both ports. When you add extra keys or sequencers it will already be set up.
4. If your Korg has a MIDI Menu, set it up as the slave ( or external).
5. Now Pro Tools will trigger your sequences in the Korg to start.
6. If you loaded a midi file into ProTools and you just want to trigger the sounds in the Korg, you don't need to have the Korg as a slave. Depending on the Korg itself, and provided of course, you set the midi channels appropriately in ProTools, you should be all set.

And don't forget to set your X5 to use MIDI instead of it's PC/IF port to comunicate. It's adjustable via Global setting, where you probably need to adjust it's MIDI filter (Prog, Bank, SysEx, etc) as well. Enable 'em all...
