Korg X3 as a controlller

hey everyone...i have a Korg X3 keyboard and i was wondering if i could run the in and out MIDI into my USB port with a MIDI to USB connector,into Sonar to control synth plug-ins..... such as Cameleon5000 and Roland midi software synths... I have a delta 44 and i still have my computers old soundcard in there as well.... what would i need to get my Korg X3 to control software with? any tips will be appreciated! thanks! - Kyle

A simple usb/MIDI interface (Such as M-Audio MIDI-Sport), will work just fine. If your old soundcard has a gameport, you can also look into a Gameport/MIDI adaptor, but I'd go with the usb.

What Atterion said... Go get Joystick/MIDI converter or even better USB/MIDI converter, install it. Hook X3 MIDI Out to converter In, and X3 MIDI In to converter MIDI Out. Once it's installed properly, Sonar will recognice the MIDI port, thus you can assign Instrument map for your X3 (may need your Sonar CD). We can talk later on how to trigger soft synth with such configuration...

hey man! i got the m-audio UNO... i installed everything and i think i hooked it up right...now how do i configure a VST plugin soft like Cameleon 5000 to work with the X3.... thanks for any info! - Mr Kyle

also.... in the new sonar producer edition it comes with a soft synth from Roland... its GM midi 2 and my kewboard is just genral midi..... i cant control midi2 from a genral midi can i?.

The most important thing when using a keyboard with it's own sounds to get note information into a sequencer is to turn the local control off. This breaks the connection between the keyboard and the sound source inside.

If you don't do this you'll probably run into some pretty nasty midi loops --- Korg usually has this function on the 'global' page or maybe the 'system' page. If you can't find it look it up in the index of the manual.

And don't worry about the difference between GM 1 and GM 2 - GM 2 is just supposed to sound better than GM 1. They were developed as standards so midi files could be passed from user to user without confusion or attached notes about which sequence track was supposed to be the bass and which was the drums.

So you have M-Audio Uno, and it works... Great!

Now, lets rock n' roll!

To control VST instrument (VSTi) or DX instrument (DXi), you need host application like Cubase or Sonar running. As you have Sonar already, all you need to do is create DXi track and MIDI track. For example, follow these steps:

1. Turn on X3 first then Open Sonar, Sonar will automaticaly turn X3 "local off". Make sure all soundsystem connected and turned on.

2. Click Insert --> DXi synth, select VSC (for example). It will open VSC, minimize it.

3. Select any MIDI track, click on it's MIDI input / output. Select M-Audio UNO as input, VSC as output. Set proper channel (usualy 1), VSC bank and patch.

4. Hit any key on X3, you suppose to hear sound outta your soundcard (not X3) or see the DXi track meter jumping.
