There is a difference between "dedication" and "self-destructive behavior," and IMO singing when your instrument is not in good condition is just nuts- when damaged, vocal chords can take a while to heal, and there are injuries that can cause permanently damage, esp. if not allowed to heal. Even singing the "wrong" way can cause real damage- I think the lead singer of The Spin Doctors did that to his voice, although I hear he is able to sing again. Really, if one is a singer, it's hard to imagine anything much scarier than losing one's voice, when it did not have to happen.
