last kick drum I recorded sucked bad.

Any tips on recording the kick drum as far a mic to use/placement and any specific compression settings?

My choices of mic are:
Shure SM57
Peavey PVM 580TN
AKG D790
Oktava MK-219

You could probably use a sm57 inside about 2" away from the beater and eq the f*ck out of it w/some compression.

Hey Rats!

It sucked in wich way?
Can you be a little more specific?
It can suck in many ways...

For a start: next time you record a Bass Drum, be sure to look at your mics specifications and be sure to pick for the Bass Drum the one that can handle more pressure (dB SPL). This is the first step. If you have two or more similar mics in SPL, then pick the one that has the best frecuency response in low freqs (check the graphics provided)
If you dont have the mic specs, look for them on the web...

Peace.

i have been getting good results lately by loosening off the beater head alot to get more air movement, with the resonance head removed. place the mic even with the open end of the shell, pointed right at the beater. i try to run my pre and compressor pretty hot on kick.
hope this helps

I think you might have answered your own question. How did it sound acoustic? Did it suck, or is it just the recording that sucks.

The drummer I record with a lot is sometimes busy for a couple of hours just tuning and twisting his kit. We constantly make recordings of this tuning and twisting untill we believe the kit sounds at it best on tape. It might be that it acousticly sucks by then. That's no problem though, we're going for the recording.

Our goal is to get a 'real live' drumsound without using EQ. Just switching mics and position, and tuning drums.

it takes a couple of hours, but saves much more houres during mixdown.

Thank you thank you

Will try and experiment with these notions...:)

So you're saying that instead of working with mic choice & placement, you just crank on the drums until they sound good through the mics? Man, you cannot touch my acoustic guitar :)

(just kiddin just kiddin)

No I'm saying that if your drumsound sucks, you'll get at most a very realistic sucking drumkit on tape.

If your drumsound is awesome you might get this onto tape.
