my kick batter head broke the other day, so i just ordered a powerstroke III.

my beater is 2-sided, plastic and felt. i've been using the felt side (which is a bit stronger than the standard felt ball beaters) and that ate through an unprotected head within 2 months or so. the head was pretty old, but had only been struck by the regular old felt ball for 99% of it's life.

so i'm trying to decide between these:

aquarian kp1
which i'd use with the felt side

remo falam slam
which i'd use with the plastic side

the reviews for the kp1 say it'll focus the attack a little and i wouldn't mind tightening up the felt-side sound a bit, but obviously you can't really trust those reviews.

if i use the plastic side along with the falam pad, will that pretty much eliminate the damage done by the hard plastic? how long do they typically last?

basically, i'd just like to know if either combination is more likely to outlast the other. thanks for any input

I've used both with a Pearl quad-faced beater (2 plastic and 2 felt sides) and honestly, I like the Falam slam better. I, too, went through kick batter heads like nothing until I went out and grabbed the Falam slams, and now it's been quite a while since I've done any damage to the heads. The pads will add some attack to your kick drum (which is never a bad thing IMO) but won't take away any of the sustain.

So my choice is the Falam slam. Let me know how whatever you pick works out.

Cheers.
