Kick mics - can I save some money?

Hey I'm going to be getting a new kick mic soon, but I was just wondering if I can save myself some money. I remember a few people here saying that the new Samson Q kick mic isn't too bad. Normally I'm not a big Samson fan, but if I can save some money on the kick I can spluge a little more in other areas. How does the Q compare to the ATM25/D112/Beta52 crowd? Thanks in advance for any input.

Do you already have an SM57? I've seen a few people on this board using those for kick mics in a pinch and the consensus seems to be that while this isn't preferable, it will suffice.

Yes, but I wanted a little more of the low end that a 57 just can't get. I want a dedicated low-frequency mic, but I'd like to save the $100 if I can.

Heck, the last time I checked (which was a while back) mint ATM25's were under $100 on ebay.

I am a B52 fan all the way nothing has the beef it has. The D112 is a nice all around kick mike, nice and punchy and the ATM 25 seems a little cardboardy to me. I know a few touring engineers that love them but hey it's all opinions and taste.

For kick I have in my arsenal B52, EV RE27 n/d, D112. Pick your poison.

I only paid 150 for my B52. I bought it used.

I've been using the Audio Technica pro 25 on my kick for about 2 years using it in clubs 3 times a week. It's help up great, and still sounds great to this day. For recording I do use a Beta 52, but for live purposes, the pro 25 has plenty of low punch. Great for toms, and bass cabinets too!!!!

Another possibility is the Peavey 520i or 520tn. These are large-diaphragm dynamics and are very good for kick drum and many other things. For kick, I prefer this mic over D112, RE20, and M88. You can pick one up on eBay pretty cheap.

Used D112's can usually be found in the $100 - $130 price range. I've never tried the Samson mic, but I would guess that it pales in comparison to the D112.

P.S. D112's are also "interesting" on vocals, and great on bass guitar cabinets and low brass instruments (Tuba, Trombone, etc.)

This month, Guitar Center has AKG D 550s for $55.

These are relatively unknown kick/bass microphones, but what I've been able to gather they're pretty good for kick, if not for micing bass cabs.

List, which seems pretty inflated, is US$244.

Thanks for the help everyone. One more question though...what exactly is the difference between the ATM25 and the Pro 25? I have heard that the ATM25 is much better, but never heard why or in what way.

Also are there any other opinions about the AKG D 550 or the Peavey PVM? Thanks again,

GA - it's for kick drum.

I'm looking at the CAD as well, I've heard some good things about it from other people too. The Pro 25 is tempting though...assuming it's similar to the ATM25 wich I have used before and like.

I have most of the typical mics used for kick... D112, Beta52, RE20, etc... and my favorite is the MD421. IMO, the PRO25 sucks compared to the ATM25... get the ATM25.

I found that mic to be WAY too boomy for most kick applications! My mileage was WAY off on that one.
