Hey guys,

I want to experiment and try a new microphone coming up for Kick Drum. What I am thinking of getting (either for price or "name") is the Shure Beta 52 or the Audix D6. Most of the stuff I record is modern rock or softer including blues, jazz and soul. What mic do you use and would either of these be a good choice for oomph and clarity (I like the click). If you have something in the same price range that would be as good or better please let me know.

Thanks :)

The Beta-52 is too Boomy for me.
It's a great mic, nice and smooth, but I prefer a D112, MD421, RE-20...
My typical Kick Mic setup looks something like this.

MD412 inside near the head, AKG d112 almost towards the outside, homemade subkick right on the outside head.

I normally put my Mojave M-200 outside the kick around 2 feet infront as well about level with the tom, i mix that guy in to taste.

akg d112 is definitely the most "modern" sounding IMHO. i've gotten great results from the d6 as well though. definitely would recommend the d112 if you want that click/attack.

i just stuck an sm7b in my kick drum yesterday.. wow, im pretty impressed, a little comp and eq go a LONG way on this mic.

The D6 is my favorite kick mic by far for modern rock and indie, followed by the D112. I like the Shure SM7 as well. I even find use for the humble SM57 inside the kick drum...I did that several times last year. I like the MA-200 outside the kick too..lots of attack, accurate low end...very nice.

If you want click then i think an sm57 near the battering head works pretty well. If you want more of a boomy sound combine it with something like the d6 or d112 outside the kickdrum near the resonating head. i've been doing this lately seems to work pretty well.

I like the heil pro pr 40. Sound really natural. Even "woody".

Here is what I do. I have both the d112 and the d6 and think the d6 is a way more versitle mic. If you are looking for click just eq it that way. Check out the freq curves that both of the mics have. The d6 just has more of the "modern" freq I think. Good luck.
