Hey, i play in an alternative metal band, i really like my kick drum to be heavy in the mix, (like deftones..) (i also have a home recording set up in my appartment) i am looking for the metallica kick sound ... that type... and, looking so it doesnt mix in with my bass guitarists tone, which can be altered...

so.. i need guidance in getting the metallica kick sound...and knowing how to have the bassist eq his bass so it doesnt take away from it...

if someone could guide me into how to do one of/both of those things, or point me in the right direction that would be more than appreciated..

thanks for your time.

edit : i really am looking for the whole metallica drum sound. minus the snare.

Hmmm...You might wan't to look into a AKG D112 or Shure Beta 52. I'm not really sure on how to get that metal kick. I would guess Mic the batter with a 57 and have a kick mic inside the drum off axis then do some eq cutting. Somebody here knows more on this then me I hope. Dosen't Lars have a big hole in his bass drum?

In order to get Lars' kick sound (from the black album I assume) You will need at least 3 mics. A sennheiser 421 inside on the batter, an RE-20 or a D12 (not a d112) at the hole, and a u87 about 6 feet away. send all those into Neve mic pres and compress and mix to taste. You will also need a 24 inch kick.

Realisticly, you would want to look into getting a D112 or Beta 52. Get an emad head and a wooden beater(s). do not stuff your kick with a pillow or anything. put the kick mic just inside the hole and beat the crap out of the kick.

Hey Chuckie, the answer is really simple. Samples Samples Samples.

Its no secret the all the Bob Rock Metallica stuff is heavily ladden with multiple samples. The sound of new metal is triggers on the kick.

I forgot to mention that. But of course he makes his own samples with mic'ing tricks as I described above.
