I have the D112, but I see everyone raving about the Audio Technica ATM25. I can get one of those for $140 + shipping right now. Is it worth a try? I can always sell the D112 for more than that, right?

I play the Pearl Rhythm Traveler set, so it has a rather small and shallow bass drum (it sounds pretty good acoustically). I record through a Presonus Blue Tube preamp, Behringer Multicom compressor and Multigate into Tascam 488 mkII cassette 8-track. I like my kick to be punchy and articulate, with plenty of lows, but not boomy, sorta like in drum machines. Could someone with experience compare the two mics for me, please? Thank you!

P.S. And how about Shure Beta 52, compared to these?

ATM25 vs D112

I have never really compared the two, but I own an ATM25 and I love it...it works really well when i put it close to the where the beater hits the head....and i get punch, butt, and thickness, without overbearing boominess...I say go for it...i was gonna buy a D112, until i really worked with placement with the ATM25, and I don't think the D112 would get me sound that I would like better, it might get me a sound which I like just as well, but not better than what I have out of the ATM25...

I am no D-112 fan.....

I have used both mics. Overall I would prefer the AT.

But for kick drum, the RE-20 or 27 n/d is just downright killer! Beyer has a good mic for kick too, forgot the model, but have used it live with great success.

The Beta 52 is a very surprisingly good sounding kick mic for it's price. I found it far more natural sounding then the D-112, but still lacked a little detail I like in a kick drum sound.

You have nothing to loose buying the AT.

Thanks, guys, that helps. Do you usually use a pillow in the kick-drum? Mine sounds good, but the pillow is pretty big, so I can't really aim the mic at the beater (the pillow is in the way). Will I get better results by having a smaller pillow/blanket and by aiming the mic at the beater directly? Thanks.

Yeah, less dampening material in the bass drum will help.

If i ever use dampening (which i hardly do), it's usually a small pillow placed just in front of batter head (not actually touching it).

As you have a rhythm traveller kit, which has a small bass drum (20" right?), why don't you buy a drum skin which has muffle rings, such as a Remo Powerstroke 3?

I use a powerstroke 3 bass drum skin and i find that i don't need to use pillows/blankets at all.

Yeah, actually, I already bought me a nice Aquarian set of bass skins with a damp-ring, I also have new tom and snare heads, it's just that my current heads are still fine, so I didn't want to change them just yet. Maybe the next time I break down the set. Thanks, though.

Ummm

If you do a search, you'll find plenty more.
