Can you buy a skin for the front of the kick drum by itself? And do they have a specific name because I can't find 'em on www.thomann.de. Yeah, you guessed it, wanna do a decal on one for a band.
My wife had this made for me. It's basically a stock reso head with the artwork done on a thin sticker that was applied to the head. The head is a little thicker and doesn't resonate as much, but that makes it sound punchier and lower pitched. Win-win.

Actually have anyone tried this with a DIY approach? I'm worried any kind of paint will stretch if the resonant head (I'm learning!) is tightened. Greg you don't happen to know where your old lady ahd that done?

Some guy in New York called www.drumart.com or something like that. he's a smalltime guy but does great work. I'm happy with the head. I think it was about 80 bucks. A little pricey, but I couldn't do it.
I would think that you could paint a head and install it no problem. The resonant head shouldn't be that tight, or tight enough to rip the paint off. Or, if you're brave, mask off the hoop and lugs and paint it with the head installed.
I painted my head. What i did was put the head on tune it up and break it in. Then i took it off I masked off the design and spray painted it. So far no problems
