Hey,

Im really new to recording at home, ive got a pretty sweet computer, and i want to get the rest of the tools i will need. I am abit stuck though and do not know if i should go for, a audio interface, seperate keyboard. Or a keyboard with an inbuilt audiointerface.

Has anyone got any advice,

joe

All depends how far your gonna go with it. If you ever want to record live instruments or vocals an AI is a must for decent quality. If you only want to record midi then you could get away with any keyboard with a midi output, and use any daw with soft synths.

Hey,

Well im wanting to do guitar, vocals, and use in built sounds and effects.

Ive seen on one of the M-Audio keyboard interfaces that you can polug them into the back of the keyboard.

Sounds like you definitely need a midi keyboard and an Audio Interface...there are loads to look at. Next thing you need to ask yourself is how many instruments will you be wanting to record at any one time. Second, decide on what DAW suits you. Try some trials before you commit. Third, Do you own a microphone???

Hey, I think ill be doing one at a time as i work better alone :P

DO you have any advice as to what to get, Ive been told that the focusrite saffire 6 are good and they come with some generic software. This is about 150 quid. I havent decided on a keyboard yet but from what i can tell (limited knowledge) it doesnt matter which one you get coz most of the sounds is software based. So i dont know what would be the best software to get. My budget is 250-300 for the whole set up.
As for mics this will be comming in a few months i wreckon unless i can find that dream bundle. no where on the net can i find a bundle including audio interface and keyboard and mic.

Well the DAW of choice on this forum seems to be REAPER. So that would be a good place to start. Personally I prefer Mixcraft 5, but Reaper is free to get you started.

The mic of choice here would probably be something like the MXL V67G, but if your UK based like me, they are quite difficult to come by. However you can pick them up new from Amazon or Ebay Sellers for around £120. Second hand is not a bad way to go.

You could probably get an M-audio, Presonus, Lexicon or Tascam Audio interface for around the £100 - £150 mark. Just make sure you get one with midi capabilities, and an XLR and 1/4 jack with phantom power. USB2 would be quicker and help with reducing possible latency, or firewire is fairly stable also.

Any keyboard with midi ports will do, you could probably find one for as little as £50 or less if you shop around.

Audio Interface £100 - £150
DAW £0.00
Keyboard £50
Mic £125.00

Total £275 - £325

Happy hunting :)

Hey

Thanks for the abundent information. yeah im uk Based too. Ill have a shop around and send you a list of what im thinking to see if you think it would be a sensible choice. Ive been in bands for years and been in loadsa different studios some really high tech some not so high tech. But getting tips from these guys as to what to buy is like pulling teeth

No problems, been when you are so I appreciate the situation, one other quick thing. If you do look at Firewire interfaces, make sure you computer has a firewire port, otherwise it'll be useless :)

Also bear in mind that the mic is a condenser mic and will need a stand.
