Keyboard Volume

I need some help. When I record my keyboard into my pc (I am using Acid program) the keyboard volume has to be turned down so low I cant hear it, but the final recorded product sounds fine. I cant turn it up anymore because the level is to high. I am recording in from the headphone jack straight to my sound card. Anyone have any ideas.

Do you have the output of the keyboard plugged into the LINE input on the sound card (rather than the MIC input)? Do you know how to use the sound card's mixer control panel to lower the gain on the input?

You say you're recording from the keyboard's headphone jack. That could be a big part of the problem. Does the keyboard have any other audio outputs?
 
Yeah it had a MIDI out, but I dont know anything about MIDI or how I record it to my PC. Do I just get a MIDI cable with an adapter to fit the soundcard or what. Not real sure about the MIDI stuff.
 
The MIDI output is useful indeed, but it isn't audio. What kind of keyboard (brand & model) is it? Maybe I can look it up and offer more suggestions.
 
OK, I got the manual. Looks like you're doing it right. The headphone output doubles as a line out. The manual says, "When connected to a musical instrument amplifier, set the volume of the keyboard to a relatively low level and make output volume adjustments using the amplifier’s controls."

How are you monitoring the keyboard's output when it's plugged into the computer? I would recommend using headphones or speakers connected to the soundcard's output, and setting the soundcard's mixer to monitor the line input. I would definitely not recommend using a Y-adapter to connect the headphones and the computer to the keyboard's output at the same time.
 
Plug your headphones into the soundcard and monitor everything that way.
 
Let me try this one more time. I have posted this reply 2 times already dont know what the problem was.

Anyway I usuall plug the keyboard directly into the soundcard. Are you saying I should try going through my guitar amp.
As for monitoring I have some external PC speakers and I can also plug my headphones into them
 
No, I didn't mean to suggest that you use a guitar amp. Substitute the phrase "your computer's sound card" for "a musical instrument amplifier" in the sentence I quoted from the manual.

"When connected to [your computer's sound card], set the volume of the keyboard to a relatively low level and make output volume adjustments using the [sound card's] controls."

Then, of course, you would monitor through the sound card's output, either with headphones or with speakers, as Tex suggested.

Ok got you. I thought it seemed a little weird to go through my amp.

For audio tho it's best to turn your keyboard to the maximum sound output and your soundcard, mixer, whatever to the lowest possible level so you don't get noise from your recording device... The Casio may be different though.
