Will this improve the recording of Karaoke?

I am looking to improve the sound and recording quality of my PC.

Researching what I thought would be easy, turned into 4 days, (and still counting) of reading and searching. I?m still not sure if I?ve selected the right components for making vocal recordings. The technological out there overwhelms this 79 year old.

What I have:
Mother Board: Intel D975XBX2
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz
8 GB system memory

What I plan to purchase:
Sound Card: OMEGA Claro Halo 24-bit 192KHz PCI Sound Card @ $200
or M-AUDIO Audiophile 2496 PCI Interface @ $100

Mixer:
M-Audio FireWire Solo FireWire Mobile @ $188
or Mackie 402-VLZ3 4-Channel Mixer @ $100
or M-Audio Fast Track USB 2 @ $120

Do I really need a mixer? Or just a preamp?
PreSonus TubePre Single Channel MicPreamp with VU Meter @$130

Microphone:
Shure SM58 Dynamic Microphone @ $100 or
suggestions

My budget is $500 but I could manage a few $100 more if necessary.

Would someone out there please help me select a suitable configuration for recording Karaoke on my home PC?

Hi there,

I am using the M-Audio 2496 PCI in my PC and connected to a Behringer UB1202FX Mixer. I have a Sure SM58 and 57 mics with AKG K240 headphones.

My computer is a E7400 Intel Core2Duo Asus P5Q Pro Turbo MB running Windows 7.

The good about the M-Audio is that it has a Monitor Mixer that you can blend in the sounds from your PC (online Karaoke site for example). I also have the Behringer UCA202 USB but it cannot get sounds from your PC so you can't do Karaoke with it unless I haven't figured it out yet. I can hear my PC sounds but I can't get the computer sounds integrated with my line in recording. I tried the mixer but some weird things happen.

I've been trying to find a USB interface for my laptop to do Karaoke but have not found one yet. If anyone knows, please let me know.

check out the TASCAM M-164UF. there is a video demo at the website ---> Product: M-164UF | TASCAM
Live Mixer & a Recording mixer all-in-one. All 16 channels can be recorded vis USB 2.0 at 24 bit audio.
I have one, and I have recorded some people doing karaoke, where the karaoke tracks were coming from another PC, audio fed into mixer and into 2 channels on the mixer. Vocals was recorded Dry via Channel 1 and with onboard FX on 13/14., so I had 5 channels recording at once. I'm sure the karaoke music could be imported directly in DAW and played back, and vocals recorded as overdub, but all my past recordings before this mixer were live "stereo" captures.
Believe it or not, the FX track was not used in final mix. The Dry vocal sounded great, must be the room's acoustics. Actually, no FX were used, period.

I have also recorded live jams ... "looped" drum MIDI from PC #2, mic'd guitar amps and vocals mics all recorded as individual tracks.... LIVE. Yes, a proper mix needed to be done, but no overdubs. The only VST FX used was a stereo widener VST on one of the guitars. The vocals used the onboard chorus/reverb FX (13).

This one is a live jam using Tascam M-164UF. Left - My friend was using a Fender GDEC, and was mic'd with SM57 (first guitar solo) and the backing came from the GDEC. I added a Stereo widener VST. Right (me) I was playing through my Zoom G7 directly into the Tascam M-164UF. My first solo starts around 3:00 to 4:25, #2 at 6:00, #3 at 9:05
3 tracks were recorded live. 1 for mic GDEC + 2 (stereo) for my guitar setup

Thanks johnny...

track sound great.

tascam product looks like what I want but really looking for a device like the Behringer uca202 (compact) since I already have a mixer and budget is around $100.

seems like the m-164uf is also discontinued.

M-164UF is brand new in Fall 2009 ... look under Tascam ... Pro Audio ... Mixers. There is 3 M-164 models

I also have a Behringer UFO202, which is same as UCA202 except it has a switchable phono pre-amp (for turntables)
I am using it on my laptop, for audio playback to decent speakers, Eagle Arion 506, and headphones. Has a decent headphone output with volume wheel

So do you want to record vocal tracks on top of karaoke tracks that are already on your computer? or do you have your backing tracks on cd's or something?

Thanks for answering my post.
I have a karaoke program and am recording from CD+G and burning them to a CD. Everything is working OK, and the results seem OK. What I really want is to upgrade my AWS. Right now I use the onboard sound card.
So far I am leaning toward:
Shure SM58-LC Mic
M-Audio Audiophile 192
M-Audio DMP3 Preamp
But with my lack of experience, I am not sure these components will do the job. What do you think?
Regards.
Ray
