Going to collect a JV-1080 tomorrow

I kinda play 80's new wave stuff and my old ax-7 has done me well along with some VSTi's but Ive always wanted one of these..

Ive got the eighties sounds covered with the presets but want to get some expansion boards...anyone any experience with these...what should I go for first?

I have Zero-Gs Nostalgia so I might save vintage keys for last (which would be my first choice normally)

has anyone used the JV-80 Rom cards?

thanks for any help

Ebay is always a good source for these. I have a JV-2080 (+10 better!:p). Love that little box.

already started..nearly filled the expansions (and found a supplier of ROM cards in Argentina!)..used it on my last track..this is the synth I've been looking for..I know folks call it bread an butter but man I really like bread and butter :)

between this, the AX-7, and a handful of soft synths, I have most of the sounds I need/want

I considered looking for a 2080 but I heard the midi timing wasn't as good and it has some issues with "digital grunge"? mind that's the internet rumour factory for you....

What programme are you using to upload patches?

Maybe I'm missing something...

I have used the JV/xp series for about 10 years now.

I sold my 1080 for 2080. I would not call the jv/xp series "80's" sound.

The 80's sound is mostly about FM , wavestation, d-550, m1, tx/dx etc.

JV/SP series is nothing like that. So im confused, do you want JVXP sounds or "true 80's" sounds?

I wouldnt recomend a JV/XP for 80's sounds

IMHO

Maybe a dx7 tx7 tx802, tx81z dx11 fb01 m1 m1r o1w o1w/r wavestation d50 d550 ???

I'm not a tribute band nor looking to completely recreate that sound identically..but say today I wanted a TB sound...its was fairly easy to replicate on the 1080..I cant do that on an AX...I also use more modern sounds mixed in with that style of new wave..again I couldn't do that on the AX..I can with the 1080

in all of the two tracks I've recorded

maybe I was wording it wrong or I'm just incorrect but I don't find a synth from 1994 particularly modern sounding..or maybe I'm an early nineties sounding band and didn't know about it :)

Well hate to tell ya, but the 1080/2080 is still very "modern sounding"

The 1080/2080 xh/jv line is still used heavilly on scores all over the map. It only got better when the XV series came out.

I remember reading an article where some composer was using multiple 1080's and started replacing them with a few 5080's

the 5080's a/d d/a filters to me and alot of other people dont sound as good as the original xpjv ones. And I have a 2080 almost maxed out and the 2080 filters sound warmer than the 1080.

It is all in the ear of the beholder I suppose.

And yes, the jv xp series can do wonderful tb emulating.

And I salso have a xp-30

I find them to fir well in with the rest of my studio:

Roland: Fantom Rack, JV-2080 expanded, JD-990, D-550 and XP-30
Korg: Triton Rack, M1R, Wavestation SR, O1r/w and MS2000
Yamaha: MOTIF ES Rack, TX802, TX81Z and FB-01
Access: Virus TI

I'm hunting to find a Roland JP-8080. I sold it and am having synth regret at this point.

I will get a korg radius rack, Nord lead 2 rack and then I THINK I'm done !

At 14 years old I don't find it modern

Im not arguing with you because (as you say) much of this will be opinion based on what genre you are listening to..and Im sure the 1080 turns up in quite a few, as well as film and media...but many of the presets are based on previous "older" rolands..the vintage keys expansion board..sound..vintage, keys of the 60s and 70's sounds..like keys from the 60's and 70's..add that to JP 8, Juno and TB 303 sounds that are already on it, or can easily be tweaked..then Id call it an older sounding synth when I use it, for you it will probably be different..It's only to back up my guitars or provide a backdrop for softsynths

but remember the eighties ended in 1989 not 1984 :)

forgot to say...nice kit you've got...I can but dream :)

Thanks. It took a while to build up. I had alot more stuff at one time:

Alesis DMPRO/Hart Dyn. Elec. Drum Kit, Mr-Rack, D-110, U-220, U-110, S2800, JV-880, Kawai K1 ( i think), S-330, mirage, MC-303, VirusA, JP-8080, mackie1202

I know I'm missing a few thing. This list is off the top of my head.

I wish I never sold / traded in ANY of my stuff. I thought selling trading to upgrade was a good idea at the time but man oh man i am sorry.

I will never sell/trade anything again - EVER. LOL.

EDIT: I did forget. I had a alesis d4, midiverb, yamaha s80, tg77, tg500, JV-90, qsr, ensoniq mirage, planet phatt, boss dr660 and roland r8m. I'm sure i'm still forgetting something.

And yes, it is late 80s. I will be repurchasing my u110/d220 soon.

Its not what you have, but how you USE what you have ;)

that's it in a nutshell

I had an editor question on another thread I wonder if you could help with

What thread, what question?

the problem up loading banks into the JV..if I use change it the transfer will only work if the banks presets are named individually..I bought some banks the other day and when I drop the SysEx file in it just says "00generic patch"...then when being tranferred the midi light flashes but nothing comes up on the screen...same when I use MQ and MidiOX..

only about half the banks Ive downloaded work but they weren't paid for, just freebies so I didnt expect much but this guy guarantees his work..and he ahs the rep to back it up :(

here's pics of what I mean..any help much appreciated
