Real drums please. But then, I'm just a biased old real drummer. I actually programmed 6 of 8 tracks on a Roland R8 back in 1994 for Battalion's second album, and then we applied these fantastic samples. The album sounds great to this day, but oh how I wish I had it to do over. I produced this CD, and my producer hat was on tightly as I wanted perfection. Well, thats exactly what I got, perfection...to a fault. To this day, my two favorite songs on that album are the ones I played on.
The only really smart thing I did on that CD was to overdub my real HHs and cymbals. So, I guess in a way, I really did play on all the songs, but the drums still sound a bit cold and sterile to me. As stated above, electronically generated cymbals suck. Even sampled real cymbals can suck because a real drummer plays a cymbal a certain way at a certain time in a song. One size fits all cymbal crashes sound terrible.
