Okay. I will be getting a Macbook within the next couple of weeks and want to have a small recording set up to go along with it. I will be using Logic Express, but what preamps, firewires, monitors, etc. would you recommend purchasing? I will only be doing minor vocals and some guitar. Price range is around $500 for everything. Thanks -Ben

I'm always pushing M-audio stuff but that's only because it's what I'm using. It's pretty cheap and works fairly well if you only want to do a couple tracks at a time. I have a Firewire Solo and haven't had many issues with it. The preamp isn't super strong, which is my only complaint. It's fine for most things but if you're recording someone who sings really quietly you might have some issues getting a really clear sound without an external preamp. DMP3 is a low cost option for a preamp. I haven't used it but people seem to think it's alright. You may have some issues getting everythng including monitors for $500. For low-cost monitors you could check out KRK products. I rented the Rokit 5s and bought the Rokit 6s (I think they have a much better all-around sound and are more accurate). The 5s have a pretty clean sound but I wouldn't recommend them to anyone mixing anything with much bass. You can get away with a lot more on the 6s without needing to pair it with a sub. In my opinion. There are some other options for low-cost systems out there, this is only one way to go.
