I'd very much like to know how you'd plan to get a multi-tap echo out of a 3-head deck.

This is easy...

you hook the tape machine up to a small mixer. Original signal comes in channel 1, goes out Aux 1 to tape machine. Tape machine feeds back to channel 2, which feeds to wherever you need it, and you can bleed some back to aux 1, where it repeats...
