I bought a real drum set (formally recorded with the Roland td-6 V drums) and had a problem getting a good mix with the drums through a Yamaha Mg10 10 channel mixer sent through the Digidesign Mbox (2 channel USB interface).

SO...I went out a bought a new bass drum mic (audix d6) new set of tom mics (three sennehieser e609s) an sm57 and im using a two mxl 603s for overheads. i also bought $300 worth of acoustic treatment and still cant get a quality sound. i tried for over a week to get a pro sound and I couldnt. moved the mics around, messed with the mixer, ran back in forth a hundred times and listened through the monitors. my snare sounds crappy and not clear and seperate from the rest of the drums.

i feel the main reasons i had this proablem were the crappy yamaha mixer mic pres and the fact that i cant separate and edit the drum mics in the mix. it is all or nothing.

i really hope i made the right choice in upgrading my Mbox to the digi002. i paid $1037.oo for the didgi rack new throught http://www.bayviewproaudio.com

i plan on selling the mbox on ebay and getting at least $300 for it. i also have DFH 2 im going to sell with it.

i hope i made the right choice. i just feel i cant get a nice clean mix of drums with the little yamaha mg10 into two channels.

theres only 4 preamps on the digi002r and i have a blue robbie one channels mic pre so i plan on using the little yamaha mixer to act as a mic pre for the tom mics.

so whata ya think? did i make a good decision? im having a bit of buyer remorse:(

thanks

I just bought a Digi002 and so far I have had nothing but great experiences with it. Granted, it is slightly different than the 002R in that it offers much greater control, but since the designs are similar and the pre-amps should be identical, I wouldn't regret the MBox upgrade at all. The 002 I bought cost $2100 and it has been the best money I've ever spent on recording gear so far. I've done some great drum work with it, the pre-amps give a very nice, warm low-tones in the bass drum, assuming you do proper mic-ing with it, and they also give the snare a bit of extra crispness that the preamps from my Behringer Eurorack 2442-FX can't.

i should be getting it tomorrow.

i got an m audio DSP3 preamp for the remaining two channels i need.

cant wait to record the drums!

Rickson Gracie- Why are you using the 2 channel output from the mixer to your Digi box? This doesnt make sense to me when you could use the insert jacks on your Yamaha MG to direct output to seperate channels on your Digi 002, which is what I do with my Mackie and delta44?

Is there something that I'm missing here?

I decided not to use the yamaha mg10 at all. thats why i got the dmp3 preamp. i want to c\keep the channals as clean and simple as possible which i believe is important for the best sound.

my digi didnt even come today :( ill have to wait for tomorrow.
