OK, related speaker question

Sorry for asking what probably should be an obvious question, but if the head is rated at 5 watts, it would be virtually impossible to find a speaker that it would blow, right? I mean, unless the speaker were rated at 5 watts or less. Since most instrument speakers seem to be rated in the 100w or higher catagory, pretty much anything would be safe to try with it, right? (as long as it's a correct impedence, that is, no 2 ohm drivers).

I've run it thru speakers ranging from 30 watts to 300 watt cabs and haven't had any issues fully cranked or otherwise.

some of the most expensive guitar speakers are rated at 15 watts.

but even they should be safe, right?

Just don't want to blow up anything, least of all a new head.

Or expensive speakers, for that matter, but I'm sure mine won't be.

I'd like to try to find a good 8".

Wait a minute, that didn't sound right.

You know what I mean.

We know we you meant alright. :D :p

Picked up a Valve Junior at GC for $90 today. :D :D

Sweet sounding with my bass into a 15" floor wedge.
Nice mellow tone at low volume and nice breakup at higher volume.

Welcome to the cult, now bow before the mighty VJ.

What a cool idea!

I've been wanting to get a small bass combo with a tilt-back cabinet. There's a great alternative.

So can you play it loud enough for practicing by yourself and still keep it clean?

Here's a band I recorded. My Mesa DC3 blew up right as we were about to track guitars and we had to resort to the VJ and a metalzone. He also used a delay and flanger or phaser pedal. It's not properly mixed yet, haven't even done vocals but I think the guitars turned out really good.

Wow, really good work man. Sometimes mistakes just work out for the better, seems especially true with regards to recording. The song reminds me a lot of older Hopesfall. Keep up the good work.

omg....

omg....

omg....

i think i still might get one.... :p

some nice tones on this throughout the thread, i have some celestions laying around too...thanks Lt Bob!

Can anyone explain the two front end resistors?

the two in the front by the Guitar jack. just wondering what they do?

also anyone know the gain stages.... a friend and me just bullshitting, think he's gonna buy one too.

I just ordered a combo a couple of days ago-- should be here on Wednesday! :D
I think i'm going to pick up a Weber Minimass to help tame it down for apartment recording/practice and then get a decent speaker cab for it in the not too distant future. I can do that all for about the same price as a Z Vex which rules. :D

Get a 4x12, it sounds HUGE thru a 4x12.

got my combo today-- must say that this little beast combined with a $30 behringer to800 (blatant tube screamer copyright infringement) sounds amazing.

Congrats on the purchase, Epi has really done something amazing with this line up of amps. Now post some clips when you get a chance, and if possible try the amp out thru a 4x12.

Just ordered the Valve Junior Combo for Christmas. Was gonna try it out in the shop but the guitars they had there were just SHIT...I mean nothing was in tune, and after trying the WORST strat copy ever, I decided to trust your great reviews and go ahed and get it. Cant wait for Christmas!

My local music shop has the combo (not sure if it's the newer model with the hum problem fixed) and the valve standard. I want a small tube amp strictly for recording and the combo is looking pretty good. I don't think I've even ever played a tube amp, mind you guitar isn't my primary instrument. I think if I get some time this week I'll go and try it out. Be cool if it had a reverb tank in it too though...

I found three videos on Google of a guy A/B'ing his modded and unmodded VJ combos if you guys are interested:

His unmodded might be the older model, but it's pretty noisy.

I still say the head version thru a lower wattage 4x12 cabinet is the way to go. If you do it right this amp can sound huge and it's honestly the most quiet of all the tube amps I own. Even the head thru a single 12" would probably be better than the 8" combo.
