Just got an Epiphone Valve Junior head .....

The combo's different than the head. My head is completely quiet and I've seen a bunch of reviews that said the combo's noisy and the head's quiet. My head is definitely quiet.

Yes ...... you could use a power soak with it but I get a nice bluesy tone at 1/4 and I didn't find it that loud. Your idea of loud and mine might be different.
But I could put it in a closet to record and I doubt anyone would hear it.

I'd love to get one next to my Rivera Pubster which is sort of a Super Champ on steroids. I know I've been whoring it all over the board but I recently got a '62 Silvertone 1448. Three watts into a 6". It was built into a DanElectro guitar case but I have it in a box I cobbled together. It gets dirty but it won't "scream" It's just about perfect for blues.

my first amp ( 1972) was an old (50's or 60's era) epiphone tube combo with one 15....it sounded so good...natural blues tube saturation to die for.

the transformer went south after a couple of years. I threw it away because the music store I was doing business with told me it wasn't worth fixing.
I loved that amp.

Man, I wish I had kept it...but, ya live and learn I guess.

I got to add my 2cents worth to the Epi tube amp deal.

Maybe I just got the bad end of a first batch but I bought the little combo jr. like 5 watts or so............ All it did was hummmmmmmm and LOUD! :(
I was so disapointed the floor model worked fine but the store wouldnt sell it to me and the boxed one I first got was humming and the second one was basicly crushed.
Damn shame cause the floor model worked swell.

Epi addressed the hum issue. All the ones manufactured after December 2005 have the modifications. Look for ones with anything after 1205(december 2005) in the serial number. Prices were also raised $10 and $20 respectively for the head and the combo.

Well, to my surprize my V Jr. head came in today. I really like the way it sounds through a 2x12 cab, Very nice! I will give it a week or so before I break out the soldering iron.

Can you guys recommend a cab that would suit this head? I'm mainly an acoustic player but i've been playing my electric more and more recently and I want something that sounds a bit better than my Orange crush to play out with.

Cheers

I broke down and bought one of these epi valve jr heads this past weekend.
I built a speaker cab yesterday (single 12") and loaded it with an old Eminence 12" out of an Ampeg 4/12 cab I had (3 out of the 4 speakers had ripped cones  ).

The amp sounds real good with the closed back 1/12 cab. It also, sounds good through the 2/12 open back cab of my hot rod deville.
Im going to record something with it next weekend.

Thanks for the "word up" Lt. Bob....great bang for the buck on this one!!!
;)

Cool ..... I'm glad you like it. I felt almost evangelistic about the amp 'because of that very thing ...... the cheapest way I can see to get true tube tone.

Heck, I even used it on a gig last week ..... a very soft gig but a gig nonetheless.

I'd also like some advice on a good cab to go with this head, as I'd like to purchase an Epiphone Valve Junior head for recording purposes.

Epi

LT Bob, maybe you should look into becoming a reseller.
You've got me wanting one now. It sound like you might
be losing a little of the magic with the combo version.
Has any one ABed them?

Bring on the sound clips! Let's hear what that little sucker can really do.

Not mine, but a user over at the Harmony Central forums made some clips: http://www.instituteofnoise.com/L6/ampclips.asp#Epiphone

I'm also interested in what cab to pair with this head. I'm looking at the Epiphone Triggerman, mostly cuz it's inexpensive and MF has free shipping right now.
Thanks scrubs that's exactly what I was wanting. Now I know to steer clear of that amp. The clean sound was ok but it turns to nasty mud when cranked YUK!

I think the head is better than the combo. For one thing, the combo has a 8" speaker. Plus the DC filaments are supposed to be better and you have the three taps for different impedence speakers.

I've been playing mine thru an open back 10" .... I favor 10's anyway and I like it thru that.

My modded combo is great. The Head is OK but is a bit muddy when turned up. I still haven't dug into the Head yet. Way too much recording these days.

I was able to nail the Albert King "personal manager" tone with it....that is a VERY hard tone to get IMO.

Im going to record something with it this weekend...maybe just play some fresh guitar over some previous tracks of mine...but I expect to get outstanding guitar tracks with it.

We shall see.

I would call the overdriven tone, "farty," for lack of a better word. Similar to some classic tube amps, but definitely not a modern tone. I dig the clean sound and the "just breaking up" tone, but the heavy distortion would only work in certain situations.

I ordered mine yesterday.

so do the amps still have the hum?

Just curious as the hum was suppose to have been
taken care of on this years models.
It doesn't really matter because I would enjoy drilling
hole in it and hot rodding it ;)

Also I am looking into a reverb to use with it.
Has anyone ever tried the Electro Harmonix
model that goes for about $100. I have this
crappy BER VAMP Pro with reverb but it destroys
the sound of anything that goes through it.

The reviews I've read all said the head didn't have the hum problems and my head is quiet as can be ........ no hum at all.

Also, it really responds well to pedals. I can run a Bluesdriver into it and at some settings I can get it to go louder and actually be cleaner with the pedal. So I think that if you normally use a pedal to get your distorted sound ...... then you can get it and a more modern sounding distortion by using a pedal.

I have quit using it live except for the absolute softest of gigs ..... it's just not loud enough although we'll see if that changes when I put two of my old JBL-D110's in a cab!
But it's not being loud is such a plus for me as I can record it cranked wide open in the middle of the nite without waking up my wife.
That's pretty cool .... no more modelers for me ..... YAY!

In case you didn't notice, all those samples were recorded on the neck pickup of a squier telecaster...not exactly something known for remaining clear and precise under high gain.
