i just read this months CM magazine and they had an article on mixing something or another but they were reinforcing the importance of decent monitors...with a picture of RP5's above lol

Well marketing do have to satisfy their advertisers you know. Unfortunately that's how the world works.

good luck with those mid heavy mixes you're about to produce Rodd

I said I've returned the Rokits

Wow...nice place.

You like it? I decorated it my self! I think I went a little over board with all of the different hues of blue but I think that it matches the motif of the smilies.

Hey Grim Have you had problems with CDs losing "it"?
I have some older CDs that I did years ago and they are starting to turn! that is some are flaking and just seem to be deteriorating with age.
Hope their not from Lankershire(sp). :(
I don't like the sound of that ! With those CDs in the 'infamous Blackburn batch' debacle, they were 80 minute CDs and what would happen is that at around 65 minutes, you could hear this "Scritcha scritcha scritcha scritcha" sound. It would begin very quietly then would increase in volume. By the 70th minute it was loud, so the final 15 minutes were unlistenable. Because I didn't discover it for over a year and had sold the vinyl, I was stuffed ! Fortunately I still had them on tape so I was able to transfer and salvage with only a tiny loss in quality.
Around the same time I transfered my wife's vinyl and they're all OK......except one. A very rare lovers rock reggae LP by a woman called Caroll Thompson that belonged to her sister. I was going to do a straight CD burn for a friend and when I put the CD in to play it, nothing ! All the data on it had gone. This was like 4 years down the line after I'd recorded it. It was a different brand from the lot that had gone wrong. On the other hand, the first CDs I ever got in '91 are still 'parfait, monsiuer' {I hope.....:D}.

Wouldn't it be the other way around? If the speakers he chose emphasize more mid and less bass, then your "joke" should be about his mixes lacking mids, and being bass heavy.

Good one RAMI - I just gave you props for that mate. We are friends now. :)

Well.....mud basically. No wait, mud in a box would be more accurate. Honestly guys, the bottom and mid ranges are awful on these. Where is the tight bass and open and detailed top end i've read about? They're anything but clear. The mud and rumbling bass just gets worse as i turn them up. I've been through my entire CD collection in search of something that sounds ok, Strokes, Interpol, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Crowded House, Pixies etc...all types of stuff and everthing just sounds so boxed in and muddy.

Granted if i lift them to above head height it's marginally better as the drivers become more aligned with my ears. But for £300 set of speakers i feel gutted.

I don't think there is a problem with them, all the frequencies are there, just in the wrong proportions.

My only question would be, do these take a while to run in? That's the only reason i can think of why they sound so poor.

Very disappointed. :(

hahahaahahhhahaa...you post was great for some reason, had me laughing...

i know a long while back I had some 5" and adding the sub dropping the 80hz and down was like night and day.

never done the KRK 5's though but have heard similar about the 3' and 4" speakers. there's a lot to be said for power too, and power amps.

not sure who invented it, but 85db was a level of volume many claim as a "test point/check point" and not sure what a small amp and 5" speaker sounds at 85db.

I have a small guitar amp, 5watt, and it sounds great quiet, then it crunches very quickly at 5 and from there on the amps just maxd out and only amplifies more distortion (which can be good for tube guitar amps).

boxed in and muddy.....ahahaha so you never said if you were going to keep them?

daaang there's an advert for the marketing guys....muddy...they'd probaly turn it into Muddy Waters or something cool to sell it though.

Muddy and Boxed in..

the bottom and mid ranges are awful on these.
so your saying the high ranges rock? ahahahaa

hmm? The solution to your problem will be to only record music that doesn't have Bass and Mid Range in it.

there you go!

.....ahahaha so you never said if you were going to keep them?

Ummm, the saga goes for 5 pages, did you read them or just the first post and then dive right in expecting it to be still relevant ? Lol.

jus the first one... it had such color and attention grabbing descriptions....

and now I read and yeah of course "to each their own", the room etc..

but hey I know a bass player that drove around with a blown out left rear speaker in his car system, and he never seemed to notice it.

so "to each his own"?

Ahahaha so you never said if you were going to keep them?
He said alot more than that !
I consider myself quite lucky, just spoke to the retailer and they are happy to take them back.
Guys thanks for all of the replies, i eventually got the BX5A's delivered the other day and can safely say they are like a breath of fresh air. Much more detailed than the Rokits and i can actually hear what's happening in the mids now. The bass isnt as deep but it is much more natural sounding and minus the bloating. I can definitely recommend them!

Nice to know M Audio sound good, I'm still setting up, but that's what I got, smaller, someday I'll get better ones, but these are going to get me up and running.

Just got the Auralex Mopads for mine as i wanted to angle them, they definitely tighten things up and bring out even more detail. Rokit 5's should come with a pair of these as standard.

*Any near field speaker has to be at ear level.

*Any speaker of any sort needs to break in. Get yourself a sin wave sweep test recording, set it to repeat, and play it at loud volume for a few days on end if you want to speed it up.

*Take some light fluffy stuff out of your room (blankets etc). Put some heavy rigid deep stuff into your room (filled bookshelves etc).
