just getting started

Hello there I am just getting started here with the recording gig. I have a nice Dell computer with a strong sound card and such. I am wondering what software to start with and what additional hardware I might need to be able to record. Mostly it will be guitars and vocals. Any feedback or opinions would be great. Thanks

A good software that's cheap is n-track.

As far as gear, a good mic, a preamp and cables should allow you to start.

Oh yeah... and some nearfield monitors. You can maybe start with your stereo system's speakers.
