I am currently interested in starting a home recording studio, nothing fancy at all, just something to work with. Could someone please list out the equipment I MUST have to start recording, and I really dont have much money to start with so the cheaper the better...thank you...

assuming you have a decent computer (512 Ram is good with a fairly new processor) you will need:
- a microphone (a condencer mic would be great and would give you better results if you spent a few extra bucks). this is an important piece to get good quality.
- a premps, this takes the low mic signal and turns it into a larger, more usable singal. They come in a huge range of quality.
- An interface/soundcard, this has the Analog to Digital converters you need to take the signal from the preamp and put them into the computer. again they come in a wide range of quality. some sound cards have built in preamps.
- software, you need this to do the recording, mixing, editing, processing and mastering. lots of choices out there with many different features.

if you are on a budget, i would say focus your funds on a decent mic:
- audio technica 3035 is good condensor mic
- e-mu 0404 www.emu.com is a good soundcard with preamps built in i believe
- mackie traction www.mackie.com or homestudio by cakewalk www.cakewalk.com are good pieces of software. i use cakewalk sonar which is basically the step up from homestudio.

you may also need monitors but computer speakers would work until you got some more money togeter.

there are many tutorials you can learn from in the support section (scroll down the page) at pgmusic.com. read up about digital audio and midi.
if you have Q's - ask.
also search under my name. ive posted lots of suggestions/tips in the past year. including mics, mixers, soundcards, software, speakers etc etc.

Hmmm......

Or, you could go this route........

Tascam 424 MKIII - around $300 - $330 / OR / Tascam 414MKII - around $200 - $250
Shure SM57 condenser mic (w/cable & stand) - around $100 - $120
Any tape deck brand new - from $100 - whatever you want to pay, CONSIDERING CDR's are pretty nicely priced, around $300

NEVER under-estimate starting with a cassette based 4 track, sounds are way better than the digital recorders THAT USE data-compression, notice I didn't say ALL digital recorders!!!!! Happy hunting!!!!

Well, if you meant cheap, moneywise...

You can't beat a four track recorder. TASCAM makes the best. Used units around $140 and even new ones can have you recording your tunes with a startup cost of less than $400 including mics and cables.

The digital recording startup cost, unless you already have a killer new computer is around $1K.

Analog is harder work, and you may want to buy a ton of outboard gear, but if money is short and you really want to record now, it's the way to go.

Whoops!!!!

And Headphones.... Sony MDR V600 - $109

It may be tricky mixing thru headphones but not impossible!!!

4 track cassette and a couple SM57s. For fun you could add a little Joe Meek channel for a hundred bucks.
