I detest drum machines except as a "augment" to a "real" drum track.

Ed,

Maybe you just don't listen to the kinds of music that the great drum machine programmers are making?

Electronica and Hip-hop is were you need to look. Of course, finding the GOOD stuff is never easy, no matter what the type of music. But, man there are some geniuses out there creating synthetic beats.

Regarding this mix, all the guitar tracks sound too thin to me. The solo especially needs more presence. I think this type of music calls for a thicker sound, rather than the more open sound you've given it.

I agree that your posting songs as examples of "benchmark" recording work is EXTREMELY worthwhile. I and Buck62 are greatful for the BBS here and the opportunity to learn from amateurs and pros alike. Ed, if you could check a tune we recorded for a blues band I'd appreciate any feedback you might offer:http://sectionz.net/m04010101.asp?mp3ID=538

We tracked 3 songs in 6 hours. Approximately 6 hours was spent scrubbing the tracks. Only 1 edit was made on a flubbed chord change on the rhythm guitar track on one of the tunes. Approximately 10 hours to mix the 3 songs.

Oh....and it has live drums.

Well, my 2 cents, I like the band - good mix, singer is right on, I like the musicianship Ie: little nuances, not just straight forward music with no peaks and valleys. The only thing I do not like is the LONG intro, If I was producing it, I would get to the song alot faster, but hey, thats just my opinion. Great job.

IMHO...for their ages these guys are great. Snare drum does sound like a soda can to me. Mix is excellent considering the song ya had to work with otherwise. I'd like to hear this band after they paid 5 years of dues doing the club circuit.

I can't hear it. My quicktime thing is fucked up. I listened to it once when you first posted this message but I didn't have time to reply...

When I do get it working I will listen. I'm really looking to analyze the sound of the 2K on the hi-hat.

It's all about the 2k on the hi hat...

Snare

A lot of bands these days want that picalo (sp) snare sound. I think 311 started the awful trend. That poppy sound just doesn't seem to go with this style of music. Other than that, the mix sounded great.

Yeah, it really sucked. I originally tuned his snare with a much more "open" sound. More snare rattle, and deeper sounding. He didn't like it, even though it blended with the kit very well. Oh well, like I stated before, I do what the client wants. I "suggest" what I think is right, but if they don't want to use it, then we don't use it.

It was a pretty cheap drum set anyway.

My 2 cents

I can't get in to listen to the song right now. I am on a crapy connection. Let me say this though. I have gone to a pro studio to record a demo. I was on a very tight budget. Sonusman is right I know he can be pressed for time with a client because I was one of those clients. We ended up doing a live in the studio demo. The scratch vocals became what we used and all but a very few tracks were done all at once. With only 3 rooms to work with the guy who ran the studio pulled of some good work. In this case I would say we were the weakist link. We just had been off for quit a while and did not have our licks up. Plus our guitarist took his 74 sg62 custom in for repair the day before we recorded!!!! Kill Kill Kill. he played (tried to play) on a $300.00 guitar.

any way I hand it to the studio techs that can do great for what they have to work with.

I will also say Sonusman is right about what the band wants. The one song I got my hand in came out the worst mix wise. This guy tried to talk me down but he did what he had to do. next time I'll listen more. Next time I will not be so ignorant either.

I've been learning less is more for 10 years now and I'm still learning. I need a shocker that zapps me in the ass when I touch the effects knob, unless it is to turn it down.

Later

I'll try to load the song again.

Don't Shoot...

Ed...just listening to Curiousity. I like it...but it's not you're best work. I think the kick needs more snap and transparency. It's just this little 300hz hump bouncing along in the song. The toms are kinda lifeless. I think over all the mix is mostly snare, gtr's and vox. I don't mean to piss on ya and you know I'm not. Just being honest with ya dude.

I know what it's like to have a shitty drum kit come thru a session. Now listening to unhealed. Nice vox eq and placement. The kick sounds better and the gtr tone has a nice edge. Good work on that one. Nice bass gtr on this one Ed!

Now that I know that it's a 2hr mix...I'd say it's pretty god damn good. Good job under pressure my freind.

Anyone else have a 2hour mix? Even my balls are shrivel'n up...lol

Ed,

I guess my partner's post (MAC2) must've gone un-noticed by you, but we were wondering what you think of the recording and mixing job we did for a friend of mine's blues band.

The recording was done on an Akai DPS16 with a bunch of SM57's and one AKG C3000 in my basement studio.

It took 3 hours to mix.

Here's one of 3 songs we recorded for them.....

Commentary would be appreciated.... thanx! ;)
