Yet another song about a drunken sailor not having a clue. What can I say...?

I'm looking for any comments. Mostly on the mix, but your thoughts on performance, arrangement, lyrics are greatly appreciated as well....

Thanks,
Chili/Irish Pirate

Good performance, mix sounds pretty good to me. I like the song too. I like the lyrics too. Good work!

I like the feel man, i can imagine the "paradise" or the kinda "layed back desert island" lol Kink of Jimmy Buffet stylish. Mix sounds good. Is that a steel drum i hear in? I love it! Good stuff man ;)

Lead could come up just a tad. Instruments seem to sit more left than center/right. Maybe it's just that the busy parts are on the left. Vocals sitting just right - super clear and centered. What are you using there?
The mix is pretty level overall. There's a bit of a lack of defined bass, it's there but it's kinda cloudy. It doesn't sound bad or wrong, it actually sounds right for the mix, I just noticed that when focusing in on it. This has a strumming (guitar) tinkling (keyboard) kind of vibe, which suits the song well. Kind of like Neil Young (better vocals though) in Cabo....

:cool::D:cool::D

Hey NotreDamer, yeah man, steel drums and marimba. I like putting in that tropical feel. It's my way of escaping on cold rainy days like today. Thanks for listening.

Hey Ido, appreciate the listen and your comments, as always. I tried to keep the supporting instruments balanced. Clean electric guit, hi-hat and steel drums on left; marimba, bongos and shaker on right. Maybe the left has brighter instruments, I can switch some around.

Vocals are Studio Projects C1, berhinger mic pre (I claim ignorance when I bought it) and into my interface. I use the free classic compressor from Kjaerhaus and a little eq boost around 200hz and cut at 1khz (I had a cold that day). I use Melodyne to help with my poor intonation, but I'm getting better and dont use it excessively.

Thanks,

Chili,
You're right about the imbalance due to "brightness"!
I reckon you need to add another guitar scratching a vague reggae rhythm - but then I love reggae & anything that has a sunny feel calls for it in my head.
Good contrast between melody & lyric!
Could you add a tiny bit of 3khz definition to the bass?
Just a smidge up on the lead & pull back the tom walk that thunders across the sound stage.
The steel drums are a nice touch.
well done.

Chili, great tune. Is got a great beach side resort vibe. I agree that the Lead GTR could come up a bit. Are those bongos paned to the extreme right? Not sure why, but they were really steeling my attention through out the song.

Cool feel and a unique song. Nice work.

Really enjoyed this tune, Chili. I agree that the lead git could have more presence and I'm a big fan of boosting the bass anytime. Good vocals and lyrics. I hear a bit of Buffett, but some Glen Frey, too. Love the marimbas and steel drums. Nice accents without getting to swimmy with them. Didn't mind the bongos to one side, but they could come up a bit, too IMO. Good song.:D

Agree with Xeries on the Buffet/Glen Frey comparison. Really cool laid back vibe on this....mix does seem a tad left heavy as ido1957....guitar solo kinda fills it out as it seemed to lean on the right in my phones(cool solo!), but when it ended the left leaning became apparent again... cool song..I dig it!

Thanks everyone for the comments. It seems I'm going to have to go back and recheck the panning. I think it might be the constant ringing in my right ear that is throwing me off.

RayC - The scratch guit is a good idea, I'm going to have to try it. Not much I can do with the bass. I rolled the top off with the tone knob on the bass specifically to get this tone. I kinda like it, I didn't want the top end competiting with everything else in that range.

ObeseArmadillo - Yeah man, bongos, shaker, steel drums, marimba. I love that feel. I thought about adding more, but it would really clutter up the song.

Xeries - Thanks. I don't mind the Buffett comparison. I liked Ido's "Neal Young in Cabo" reference, too. Funny. I'll look at the solo part and bring it up just a bit.

Queepy - Thanks man. I appreciate you taking the time to listen and giving feedback.

Cheers, :D

Sounds pretty good to me. I don't particularly care for the roomy snare, but that's just personal taste. Nice sounds overall.

Hey Greg, thanks for the comments. I remember from previous posts that you're not a big fan of sampled drums. I use ezdrummer and I don't think I know how to remove the room sound from the snare. I've just gotta live with it. But that's okay, I don't have finely honed ears like you!! :D (I mean that in a positive way)

Cheers,

Lol. I have no real problem with samples in the home-recording realm. Not everyone has real drums or access to real drums and all the shit goes along with recording them. So in that regard, I love samples if they enable someone to make some music and feel good about it.

Your roomy snare works in this song though, so don't worry about it. Like I said, it's just my own personal taste. There's certainly nothing wrong with your snare sound.

Thats good stuff.

Are you doing all the instruments here?

My thoughts as well and there is some sort of percussion instrument that seems a bit distracting....maybe just a bit too busy. All in all though, really nice tune......good work man!:D

Sounds like The Eagles (think New Kid in Town) meets Jimmy Buffet over a Margaritha in the sunshine.

Good job! No nits on the mix on my end.

Mike

Love the vocals, fresh and warm, very nice to listen to. The song is fun and the lyrics suit it to a tee. Yes, the solo could be up a little, maybe using a warmer, thicker sound but the one you have there sounds fine. The drums are a little predictable but that's typical with a drum machine.

I think the words and vocals are the songs strengths. Really reminds me of the band 10cc. I have the feeling you know them well.

Wow, I'm surprised to see this one pop up again, but thanks for the kind words. Since Feb's post, I've retracked the vocals because I just couldn't get past nasally sound. Also redid the latin percussion. I also rewrote the lyrics a little because the original version kind of led to nowhere. Wasn't a complete story.

I don't have a new version posted yet, but probably will in the next few weeks.

Thanks for listening and taking the time to make comments.

Cheers,
