I mix, then mix again.

Only to find something else that I do not like.

So I mix again.

I didn't hear that before, one more time.

Still no good.

Ok, I think I have it.

Check with phones, I'm just checking, not mixing with them.

FUCK !

Still just not right, in fact awful, damn guitar way too loud, even though it sounds good in the speakers.

I have to do it again.

Check your tracks. I've had vocal tracks that you couldn't hear untill they squished everything else out of the mix. I tink having good tracks to work with is half of the battle.

Hope this helps

Actually, you may have hit it right on the head.

You see I'm trying to mix an older song.

This song was recorded two years ago, just to give my new equipment a run through.

I had never recorded a band before.

There are many, many problems with the tracking.

With my new Delta I just wanted to give a new mix a shot.

Put some of what I have read to some practice and hope for better results
then the last time I mixed this tune.

I'm still trying to get a clue with recording and I do the same thing.. No matter how much I tweak something, I still find something I don't like. The prob is deciding when to say "good enough" and leave it alone. I think that's even harder then getting soemthing good layed down in the first place...

usually when i have a hard time mixing it's because i didn't have a clear idea of what i wanted from the begining. pre-production and planning are two of the keys i've found to getting mixes that i'm at least satisfied with. they're never perfect, but they're close to what i wanted from the begining.

Don't over analyze the mix. If you are too critical you'll never finish. If Im in a whiney or frustrated mood then Im not mixing If I can help it. I find things wrong with double platinum album and even find flaws in mastering from Bob Ludwig on occasion. Take a break and come back later. Make sure in your in the right frame of mind. And remember that it takes alot of trial and error be fine tune your mixing to the point where it becomes natural or efficient. Hang in there.

Mix Modeler

Dont they make a plugin that you can just run all of your tracks though and it will model any particular commercial mix?

Step away from that particular track for a couple of days, then come back. That should help.
