Replies like Littledogs are what I was hoping for. In no way was I looking for a flame.

Yeah but all that extra information he's giving you?? Seems a little inappropriate. I mean, he went into this whole tour of his studio and why he needs the clips and talking about these other clips and his mics and everything.. I mean, you just asked one simple faulking question, right??? He didn't even touch base on it man..

hahaha

All I did was go to shure.com, clicked on their FAQ section, then typed 3 words in their search engine:

"SM57 loose grille".

It came back within about 2 seconds with all the information I posted here.

I've also used small rubber bands (like dental elastics) to snap into that groove when using claw mounts on percussion, working live- it's very effective, and completely reversible (if duct tape or Duco makes you uncomfortable). Cheap duct tape can leave a lot of spooge behind...

Folks might want to always keep a number of those little dental elastics in your toolbox, along with the duct tape and picture hanger wire. They can be session- or gig-savers for stopping rattles like this, or preventing mics from slipping in those "universal" stand clips, or a few dozen other uses.

Grampa watched Mc Gyver didnt he?
I don't know from McGyver, but Mr. Wizard taught me how to make a nuclear reactor using a milk carton,,, a piece of string,,,
and a paper clip!:p

BTW, I have that same mic kit and those clips are killer. I actually tried a few other kinds of clips, and ended up going back to the included Shures, as they're rock solid. If anything, they have improved the sound of my drum recordings somewhat as compared to stands...

I think it's far more likely that the rattling sound is something on your kit. You'll find that out yourself when you glue the grilles down, and still get the rattling.

Oh, and welcome to the site, congrats on the first impression.

OK. I skipped most of the posts here so if I missed some swearing or shaking fists pardon me.

I have the same kit and have for some time. I have used the clamps and gave never had a problem. As far as clamps go those ones are rock solid. I also have never had a problem with the mics rattling. I do not use my clamps because I have boom stands which with out a doubt isolate the mic better. something no one can argue with.

I did notice (just right now) that if I shake my mic's hard I can hear the screen rattle. So my deduction leads me to this concusion. Your drums shake to much when you hit them! I play hard with out your problem so I would assume your tom mounts are not all that solid? So you have two ways to go. Get a new drum set or get boom stands. There is nothing wrong with your mic's.

The simple fix is to put tape around the base of the screen:)

As was stressed once before, to all the people who keep advocating taping up your SM57, if you cover up the little side vents (right above the lettering that says SHURE SM57 DYNAMIC LO Z) you will get an almost omnidirectional pick up pattern, which is probably not what you want to do.

Taping...

Littledog...hope you didn't think that's what I meant...I just meant to put the tinyest of peices from the top of the shaft to the bottom of the grill...I should've said (you're right), NOT over the grill, just at the bottom...Sorry!

For what it's worth, I looked for a buzzing sound on a floor tom once for about 30 min. Couldn't hear it at the drum, but could through the cans. Put up a different 57 and all was well. Just bought Duco and glued all of mine!
Now for clamps:http://www.locall.aunz.com/~johnsay/Studio/Pages/Flatrock.htm
Check out pic #8. I bought the clamps for $.99 at the depot. Slipped off the rubber tips, bent the tips 90 degrees, slid the rubber tips back on, drilled a hole the mount the mic holder, used a carraige bolt with a wing nut on the nose to tighten it on the rim. Made 6 in a couple of hours.
Solid as a ROCK!

I know you didn't mean to tape over the top grill, but some people might not understand that the little side vents have a great deal to do with the pick-up pattern, and those shouldn't be covered either.

I have 3 SM57s, by the way... and I can't seem to shake them hard enough to produce any kind of a rattle. Guess I got lucky.

Maybe I just have more developed shaking muscles??:D
