Well I bought those ampex tape machines I was asking about before. They dropped the price to $80 from $400 bucks! Got my friend to check them out and they work fine. All I have to do now is buy some tape for them.

Isn't that the 4 track the Beatles used?
Will they sync together? Do they have pres like the older revox machines?

That's some cool shit there.

I think he got the mono ones. Not the 1/2", 4 track units in those other pictures.

Still cool old machines to have and the price was excellent if they still work?

Congrats! :)

Man those ones in the picture would be so cool for 40 bucks, but the ones I got are mono, the price was right. They do look like the ones in the picture except they only have one vu meter instead of four. And they do still work, got my friend to check them out and they are in good shape.

It looks like those have pres built in. The pre might be worth ten times what you paid for the deck.

How would i check if they have pre's in them? Plug in a mike and send it to the monitors?

In order to convert the 440 amps to mic pre's you need to add a transformer. Ampex made one for these units that plugs into the 8 pin plug on the back. These (the xformers) can be had on ebay every so often for about $40. The boxes do have a black plastic plug in the socket by default. The transformer says Mic Pre on it.

One of the many things on my list of stuff to do... convert my 440 amps to mic pre's. :) :)

Cheers
Kevin.
