ok i no this may seem like a dumb question but i never really put much thought into until now... when recording drums with a click track, does the drummer just play along to the click and thats it??? or is does he also hear the guitarist playing along with him making a scratch track... that would be the way i would assume you would do things. until a friend of mine told me that he played just to a click at the studio he recorded at, so now hes got me really confused... any help would be sweet thanks...

He would probably play to whatever suits him best. A click will keep him in time, but with a rhythum track, it might help him get a better feel to the song.

Yep, depends what the drummer prefers... most rock drummers I've played with/recorded need a 'ghost' track of the song along with the click just so they can remember their parts and know where they are :D
And if you're trying to build a groove but still record to click, it's definitely helpful to have the bass in there to play along to.
