Just a quick question

I've been looking aruond this site and learning a great deal about audio cards and their inputs and such like that. i record with a digital portastudio which is fine for what i do so I am new to this. My question is, what are the outputs used for on say this audio card. This may sound like a stupid question but I am new to the computer recording deal. Also what do professional studios use to get from the mixer to the computer with all the tracks they need, do they use a higher end audio card with more inputs?

The outputs on the 1010 would be used for sending tracks to an analog mixer, or possibly for inserting analog gear (like a compressor or EQ) into an "in-the-box" mix.

It's a little confusing, but it looks like that card provides a total of 6 inputs/outputs. Four are through the breakout box via 1/4-in phono connectors (balanced or unbalanced) and you get two more from the digital S/PDIF. To use these, you'll need to connect up something that can input/output digital signals via an RCA S/PDIF connection.

I'm not familiar with this particular unit. In general, in a soundcard/converter box, you pay for the quality of the converters used as well as the pre-amps if there are any included with. Then it's just a matter of the number of channels included.

As far as the outputs on this card, you could use them to run out to external effects units and back in to the PC. Or you could run stem mixes to an external mixing board and use the summing bus on that to do your mixing.

In larger setups, it is all about the number of inputs you need to be able to track simultaneously as well as quality of the converters and preamps.
