My room is your typical 14'6" x 10' x 8' bedroom, which is filled with misc recording gear, guitars/amps, some clothes, and a large bookshelf on the back wall. The only treatment is has is curtains over a window on the side wall and a large curtain extended over the front wall. Last week I order some GIK Monster traps and received them today. They look great and delivery was quicker than I expected. I'm still waiting for some other treatment materials to arrive from other suppliers...a couple boxes of 703. Money and time dictate that I add room treatment in stages.
Because I just received the GIK's, I decided to throw them up just for fun and see how they affected the room. I've heard that simply installing 2 bass traps in an otherwise untreated room would have very little/virtually no effect But I wanted to see for myself...for fun. Here is a graph done with a reference mic through a Digi003 using FuzzMeasure. The monitors were Mackie HR824s. The measurements were done at my usual mix position and about 3 minutes apart...nothing was moved except for the installation of the GIK Monster Traps.
GREEN : Untreated room
RED : GIK Monsters resting against front corners. Splayed across the corners, they were partially behind my monitors.
I'm no acoustician (is that what they're called?). But installing just 2 GIK Monster traps seemed to have a rather large effect....certainly more than I expected. I'm anxious to see how the room progresses as I add more treatment.
