One Hit Wonder
I am finally posting a song that isn't a cover of something from the '60's. I've moved all the way up to the '80's this time. :)

This one is a cover of a song by Restless Heart called I'll Still Be Loving You.
http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=1084&alid=-1

It's not really ready for prime time yet, but I'm struggling a bit with exactly where the problems are. I figure you guys will help me with that. :D Seriously, tear it up. I know there are issues with it, but I want to see if you're hearing the same ones I am. Any suggestions for improvement gladly accepted.

Mike

that was marvelous work on the cover. You got the flow and instruments nailed awesomely (is that a werd?). The vocals and their harmonies are excellent and on the mark. :)

I, by no means, have the expertise to play this or engineer it, but I can tell you what I hear. You can slap the hell out of me after this :)

The guitar work is expertia. I'd take a little off the high end to make it softer.
I am missing the the chik chik chik of the high hat that gives a swing point reference for the other counter rythyms and smooths them, like with the toms and the guitar strums, it makes that (bump-bump and rest, bump-bump and rest) on the drums smooth out a little too.

The vocal seems really close to the edge of the stage, Id move them back a tad and take a little of the high end off to make them warmer. The 2nd harmony in the vamp at the end is a little dominate on the root.

Still a beautiful take... :)

Man, that is one ballsy cover. I'd never even think I could tackle this song.

I thought it was very very very very very very well done. The only 2 things that stuck out a little bit to me were:

On your lead vocal, you've got a very stacatto style of singing, which absolutely rules on stuff like (for example) Beach Boys tunes, but if there's anyway you could relax it a bit on something like this,...God, I'm probably not making any sense at all. What I'm trying to say is you MIGHT want to try phrasing around some of the quarter or 1/8th notes sometimes...you know, a little ahead of the beat at times, behind at others...Obviously, you don't wanna' do that on the chorus of this song...(I thought you nailed the chorus, btw...backups especially). Like on "Changin' my life...with your love", every note you hit right on the 8th note, so it gets a bit regimented after awhile. Fuck, I just spent a lot of time typing about the smallest nitpick ever.

Secondly...Less verb on the acoustic solo...sounds like it's next door. Otherwise...You Nailed this.

[eidit] I'm giving you 5 starz for even attempting this tune. You're good.

Pretty awesome man. I hear what Chris is talking about....it's just the least little bit too precise....makes it sound a little stiff. On the other hand....the playing and the harmonies are flat-out excellent. really fine job. I would use a bit less FX on the guitar ride.

Thanks for listening everyone. You guys have pretty much hit my own thoughts about this song.

Toki - Thanks for the kind comments. You're right about the eq. I'm still playing with it and obviously haven't quite got it right yet. I agree it's a bit on the trebly side. I'll work some more on that.

As for the high hats, I deliberately buried them a bit. I found them distracting for some reason, so I lowered them relative to the other drums. I did this before the vocals were added, so maybe I'll revisit it again to see if I still feel the same way.

Chris - Thanks for taking a listen. As a point of clarification, that's not me singing the lead. I did the guitars and one of the BG's. I tend to agree that the lead is a tad stiff. I don't think he "feels" this song and it's not really his best style. (Funny, but I could imagine you singing this quite well. :) ) I plan to work with him some more, and we will probably recut the lead vocal. Unfortunately he's away for 6 weeks - which is one reason I posted it as is. As of now, I think the LG is the weakest point in the cover - and since the song is so vocally focused, it can't stay that way.

Also agree on the reverb on the guitar refrain. I'm already on that one.

Drums were Roland V-Drums (they were played not programmed).

Lt Bob - Agree with both your comments. Already taking care of the reverb on the gits. The lead vocal is going to take more time. Thanks for the nice words and for sharing your thoughts. Helps me out immensely.

Dach, what I was referring to depended on whether the band was trying to clone the original. If he was doing a new personal take on the cover I`m not sure I`d change anything, 'cause it was damned good.

Man...I love that song. I played it on the accoustic and sang it at a wedding once...a long long time ago. ;)

Bump to listen to when I get home (damn work won't let anyone download mp3's  :D

I'd be happy to lend a vocal if you need since I am familiar with the song. I could give you a dry .wav or .mp3 tack for you to play with and sync up, that is if you don't mind a little noise in the background (I haven't gotten my compuer noise issues resolved, but I can usually mask them pretty well). I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes. I haven't even heard it yet. Just offering my services as it might be fun. I may be bighting off a bit more than I can chew on this one. Larry Stewart can be a tough voice to simulate :D

Okay, for the record, I'd really REALLY like to hear that. Dachay2tnr, if you haven't heard him sing, find his thread and listen.

Yeah, that'd be cool.

Jagular - Sounds like it could be fun. Take a listen and if you're still interested send me a PM and we can work out the details. I can easily send you an .mp3 with the lead stripped out.

Man, the clinic is crazy. I couldn't even find my own post tonight with all the action going on. :D

Another great one

Did'nt like the effect on the guitar at all,but I'll listen again when you redo it.
I'd echo the sentiments of my fellow forumites that your lead singers voice while good does'nt dovetail with this song. That's from a nitpicky, perfection seeking perspective.I'm not familiar with the song,I was listening to new wave in the 80's.

I'd give it a 9...

If you change the other things it could be a ten!

Bollocks!!! NWR seems to be down. I'll have to listen tomorrow night.

Scratch that. I tried again and got it. That sounds great! I would love to take a poke at the lead vocal. The harmonies are so tight on their I'm gonna have to be real careful and a little straight when they kick in (hard for me sometimes ;)). PM sent. We'll figure out how to get the karaoke :p track to me :D.

Note, results are not guaranteed :D. I grabbed the old "Wheels CD to rehearse in the car a littel :D:D. This will be fun.

BUENO!

Only rule is that once you've publicly committed to do it (which, of course, you've now done), you have to post the results within 24 hours.

I don't make up these long standing rules, I just live by them.

(seriously, I'll be watching for this one... start a new thread when you've got something both of you can live with).

The “Wheels” are in motion (only an old timer will get that pun ;)). This will be fun and give me a chance re-acclimate myself to my gear :D:D

Let the games begin!!

Jag - MP3 without lead vocal is on the way. (There, my work is done. Whew!)

AcidRock - thanks for the comments. You are correct as always - except for giving it a 9. You must have very low standards. :D However, we're gonna shoot for that 10!!

(BTW, I'm guessing you were still into disco in the '80's. :p )

Downloading as I type. I'm going to try to track the vox right now. My wife and daughter went to bed. Not sure how it will go. The meatloaf I had for dinner is repeating on me a tad ;).

I'm listening to a rough mix w/ the new vocal as I type. :D:D

hehehe....

I just sent Mike an email informing him that the vocal tracking is done ane the CD with the wav file is on the way. All I have to say is Restless who??? Larry who??? :D

This is gonna be great, but you guys are just gonna have to wait until Mike finishes up the real deal to hear it :p

hehehehe....the rusty pipes still work a bit :D

I think this song is old enough that you could claim it as your own and get away with it. :D (JK)

Good production.Love the acoustic sound you get.Tell me how so I can record and not sound like I'm in a coffee can
