I tried to run an optical cable out of my fd4 into my dmt8vl so I could get two audio and two digital tracks at once onto my dmt8vl. I thought that if I plug two guitars into my fd4 and ran an optical cable out to my dmt8vl I could record them onto my dmt8vl. It doesn't seem to work and the manual makes me believe that maybe the fd4 will only send "stored data" via optical cable. Is it that the fd4 WON'T convert the guitars from analog to digital and send to the 8trk instantly. Im thinking that maybe it will ONLY send a "PREVIOUSLY RECORDED" signal thru the digital out. Anyone ever try to convert analog to digital with their fd4?
Fostex's web site says "RECORD 4 TRACKS SIMULTANEUOSLY" WITH THE DMT8VL! I have yet to find out how without spending hundreds more on a a/d converter!! HELPPPPP!!!!!!!!

woh... I never thought about the previous recorded material issue. Hmmmm.... I'll have to play around with my FD8 and see if it will send a "converted" signal "live" to either my Vm200 or my PC via SPDIF optical. Can you get a previous recorded track to play into the DMT8VL? On the FD8, you have to enable the digital out in the setup. What about on the FD4?

Yes, I have to set up the digi out. I set it to L1 and R2. The "?" flashes but the "Digital" never does show up? Why??
Thanks
Joe

PS let me know if you are able to get a Live digital out of your fd8

And, no. I can't get a previously recorded track to signal into the dmt8vl. I think it's because I can't get the fd4 digi out to take!
Thanks

My FD8 spdif's out just fine.. both live and pre-recorded. I"m betting it's how you're assigning which channels go to the spdif out. (the digital flashing thing is onlyl for digital input into the FD4 and not out.)

Go to the setup menu and then to digi.out. You should see something that looks like this: L] r] (the brackets are smaller on the display) That means the stereo out is chosen. You can use the jog wheel to choose individual channels instead. For example L1 r2 would be channel 1 going to the left, channel 2 going to the right. You can't have 1 channel going to both.

I'm not sure what you would have to do to setup the SPDIF inputs on the DMT8VL, but I'm betting it's similar to the FD8. Choose digital in and then choose which channels the spdif will go to.. similar to choosing the outs on the FD4. That should do it. Let me know if it doesn't.

Thanks for checking that out for me. I believe that I did it just the way you instructed. But I will double check it in the A.M. (I have them set up over at our studio, I prefer my PC system but we need the eight track for live recording at our rehearsal studio)
By the way do recall if your manual says anything about the digital out being able to send "STORED DATA" via the optical cable.
The FD4 mentions that it will send "stored data" and does not mention the "live signal". That makes me wonder? That would be a bummer if it doesn't.
THanks again, you've been a great resource.
Joe

I'm not sure about the FD4, but the FD8 does both and doesn't mention anything about stored data. Probably because the FD8 mixer section is a true inline mixer. That basically allows you to mixdown 8 playback tracks plus use the mixer inputs at mixdown. I thought the FD4 worked the same way. I'll have to do some research on that. I can't see why it wouldn't work because the spdif out is basically the same as the l-r out. I'm betting the problem is on the DMT8VL end.
