Hi,

Here are two samples, one picking and one strumming. This is done using the XY configuration. Please forgive the small amount of room noise. The signal chain is as follows:

Taylor 414--> Josephson e22s--> Avalon AD2022 Preamp--> E-MU 1212m--> Sonar 4 Producer Edition.

Fingerpicking Sample

Strumming Sample

That sounds great, Rick--beautiful playing on a nice guitar always makes a difference! Too bad I have to listen on this crappy Soundblaster Live 5.1 'till my new 'puter is built. I will be installing a 1212M on that.

I would be interested in any details or impressions on micing the Taylor 414, particularly mic placement. I also have a 414 and sometimes I'm less than satisfied with the sound. As a Grand Auditorium, it works well with fingerpicking and lead parts but sometimes won't "hold up" under anything but light strumming. I noticed your second sound file had some strumming parts mixed with light picking. Do you also find that the guitar has limits when it comes to heavy rhythm parts?

Another Interesting Comparison

I dug out this other sample as a comparison. The first sample was recorded using the Peluso CEMC6 pair, the second is the e22s pair. Huge difference.

Peluso CEMC6 Pair

Josephson e22s Pair

Note: The e22s sample is a wav file, the CEMC6 was mp3. The CEMC6s had a noise issue, which is why I did not keep them, but I still think it is an interesting comparison.

Rick--

Very cool. Usually on these where you see nice mics, nice channel, and then cheaper converters, the sound doesn't translate so well. The EMU converters sound nice here. They're not just passing a signal but passing music.

I now realize I should have stopped by the Josephson booth at AES. Congrats on the mics.

I was playing around a little with my bongo drums last night using the e22s, and

WOW-WEE WOW WOW WOW! These mics are killer! They are definitely a multi-purpose mic.

I just tried them out on my PA system, and they work extremely well for micing the guitar that way. They don't feedback very easily either. Hmmm, these are really starting to grow on me.

Rick,

The strumming clip sounds very nice. :)

The finger picking clip URL does not work.

the guitar tones are very nice... delicate and soft...

have you ever tried the Front/Shoulder Over mic positions... I'd like to hear this with the guitar just a bit wider

very nice... :)

Very musical recording, Rick. I think those Josephsons are keepers (as is the rest of your gear). Next step...converters.

Well, yeah, if he's going to get a Cranesong HEDD, then I'd say go for it. But, really, I think the EMU pretty much hits on what you can get from the Lucid units. YMMV.
