I've got a Johnson JT50 with the foot controller. I like it a lot, as it gives me a good variety of tonesand effects for gigs and is also good for recording, for the price. I am considering an upgrade now though and was wondering what you guys thought of the tube driven JM120 ?

Much appriecated

p.s. This new Vox sounds pretty sexy...is it much more expensive than the JM120 ( $1100 ) ?

hey man, I'd wait for the vox, it should cost less. However, none of these amps, including the vox are exactly loaded with tubes. I wonder if a seperate pre amp/ all tube power amp wouldnt give a better sound?

Funny side note about Johnson is that I picked up the Digitech RP100. The RP100 does some modeling of a few amps including Boogie and Fender. The funny thing is that one of the models is the Johnson JM120 (and I don't recall a Marshall model). The reason is that it's funny is because Digitech is affiliated with Johnson. Especially because the JM120 has not risen to the standard of Fender, Marshall, or Mesa/Boogie. Sure, it may be good, but it just hasn't built up the reputation to the point of wanting to make sure a modeling amp includes it in its arsinal. It seems more like Digitech is trying to make the Johnson seem desireable by including it as one of its modeled amps.

Hiiiiiiiinteressssting...

Thanks for your views, Robert and BBB .

Have either of you ( or anybody else ) got any recommendations of a good power tube amp that will keep me happy for years to come. I'm thinking maybe a reasonably old one that I can pick up second hand. My current band play mostly funk\blues\soul orientated music, and my other two projects only really use a clean jazzy sound, guitar-wise.

I could really do a recommendation of a really good wah and tremelo pedals as well as I will be losing these effects if I move to an amp without onboard effects.

Do you guys thinks this is the way to go ?

And lets not forget digitech is the company that used to put out those pre amps with the one tube, except that tube doesnt receive enough voltage to be properly driven, so its just a gimmick, like their artist series for instance. I wonder if the millenium is like that too?
The rp100 is ok, I think its effects are much better than the pods, dont know about amp sims though.
If I was to give advice it would be wait until line 6 stick the vetta in a pre amp and get that run it through a tube power amp. Of course at this point might as well just get a tube pre amp as well;-)

hey pap. just saw your reply,

check out the peavey classic 50/50 power amp, should cost about $400 new I think. Personally Im about to get a mesa boogie 20/20 power amp since I dont feel a compulsion to go deaf prematurely in pursuit of cranked tone I may also find a 5 watt or less tube combo for home recording. Also marshall makes some power amps if you want THAT sound...
Now...I hope Im not too forward here, but have you thought about a tube pre amp as well? or heck even getting a modeler and a tube pre amp as used you can find very good examples of either pretty cheap these days, check out the comparing pods thread..:-)
I do realise modeling has its place, and I have a pod2, but I still prefer tube tone. Im waiting for a veta pre amp he he he...thats when the modeling BS grows up...

I assume you already know the Johnson amps all have amp modelling built in....so....this may sound like a stupid question but given that amp modeling is (to my understanding) trying to give a digital representation of what a cranked tube amp sounds like , then what is putting a tube preamp in front of this going to achieve ?

Just a bit confused on this,

I didnt say anything about running a tube pre amp into a johnson combo. You asked about tube power amps and I named some, then I said at that point why even bother with modelers, just get a tube pre amp. Obviously I meant to run into the TUBE power amp, not a Johnson combo.

Gotcha.

Thanks for the advice, I think I will go down that road. Apologies for the dumb question : sometimes if I don't understand something 100% I look for more clarification, even on the most obvious things. It drives my boss nuts, but less nuts then he gets when I fuck up !

Anyway, thanks.

pAp.
